Weather Lowdown
The average daily temperature in July rises to 23°C, which is great news for those who are looking to spend some time on the beach. The summer is now well and truly underway, and that means lots of holidaymakers will be heading to Puerto de Santiago in order to enjoy the heat. The highs on average reach up to 29°C, while the average daily low only drops as far as 21°C so evenings will feel lovely too.
With 12 hours of sun beating down on the sea every day, it is definitely time to jump in the water and swim. The average temperature of the waves is 22°C, so you can guarantee that you will not be chilly when you dip your toes in.
Don't expect to be caught in rain showers often. On average, only 2mm of rain falls during this month, and across 2 days too so even if you do happen to see a bit of rain falling, you can always be sure that it will be over almost immediately. Some may even enjoy the wet weather as a chance to momentarily cool off! Just check the forecast if you think the sky is looking a bit cloudy.
While this month is not the hottest that honour falls to August it is definitely the driest. Good news if you were planning on heading out to explore, or just sitting next to the pool and relaxing day in and day out! The Canary Islands are very popular at this time of year, so you can expect competition for your sun lounger. Many people make the mistake of sitting out on the sands or by the pool with no suntan lotion because they want to get a tan quicker but if you skip this step, you will end up burning very quickly. Be sensible and cover your head too: it's no fun to waste your holiday with sunstroke.
Where to Stay
The Las Rosas Apartments are all fully air-conditioned, which is a big sticking point in July as the heat rises. They centre around a communal pool, but all villas are fully equipped to allow you to be self-sufficient if you prefer.
If you love being outside, then the Casa Calma is the residential holiday rental for you. Here you will find the opportunity to play tennis on a private court, or swim in the pool to your heart's content. With the sun beating down, it will feel like your own paradise.
The Apartamento Princesa Isora is a great single apartment that can be rented through a number of portals, so be sure to snap it up quickly. It has a balcony with views of the sea and is situated right on the beachfront. You also get access to BBQ facilities to help get your own party started!
Things to Do
In the July sun you may find that it is too hot to do anything energetic, so just take this chance to lie on a sun lounger by the pool and relax. You will never regret sitting with your sunglasses on and enjoying the heat just remember to put on lots of suntan lotion at regular intervals!
If you want to splash around at a waterpark, the Piscina Publica Oasis is just a short distance from Puerto de Santiago. There are slides, different types of pools, waves, and a beautiful view and a bar to keep the adults entertained if the kids want to stay longer!
If you want to get out and see some aquatic life, the M/S Katrin has room on board. The crew will take you to find dolphins and whales out in the open water, giving you the chance to see some amazing animals in their natural environment.
Hit the Beach
The Playa de la Arena is the most popular beach in western Tenerife, and with sea temperatures around 22°C, you will really be able to appreciate it. This is the cleanest beach in the area too, allowing you to see the unique black sands which were created by the volcanic Mount Teide.
You will want to think about bringing flip-flops or sandals with you, as the black sand can become much hotter than whiter sand be sure to protect your feet from getting burned. The popularity of the beach does mean that there is a thriving tourist scene here, including shops where you can buy footwear or even swimwear if you have forgotten to bring your own.
There are also beach-side restaurants as well as bars so that you can get all the refreshments you need, and you can rent a sun lounger with a parasol if you just want to relax. There is a charge to use the public toilet, but taps to clean the sand off your feet are free.
The rocky area of the beach can be prone to choppy waves, so look out for the warning flags telling you whether or not it is safe to swim. Be aware that some women here sunbathe topless, so you may or may not decide to visit depending on if you have a young family with you.
Restaurants and Nightlife
El Meson is close to the Playa de la Arena and so it is a great choice when you are coming home from the beach. It serves traditional Canarian dishes in a room decorated like a hunting lodge, creating a very unique atmosphere. It's one of the sights you just have to see here.
If tapas takes your fancy instead, try Los Corales. Here you will find a selection of great little dishes, many of them centred around seafood, just waiting to be tried. This family restaurant has been around for more than 20 years, and you can tell they have worked hard to create a great business.
For an even older restaurant, try Restaurante Pancho, which has been open since 1963. They work well with meat and seafood here, and know how to dress them up for a more upmarket service. This is a great night out to mark a special occasion.
