Temperature

In September, the average temperature in LanzaroteCanary Islands falls from 24.5°C at the start of the month down to 24°C in the final few days. Daily highs follow a similar pattern, falling from 28°C down to 27°C as the month progresses, but daily lows stay constant at 21°C.

Out of all the Canary Islands, Lanzarote is the hottest in September.

As the kids go back to school and the temperatures begin to drop, September in Lanzarote gets quieter as the month goes on. Despite the small decrease in temperature, Lanzarote still experiences summer weather in September, with clear blue skies, plenty of sunshine and high temperatures almost guaranteed. You won't need any more than beachwear, sunglasses and sun tan lotion during the day and you'll be perfectly comfortable in thin and light clothing on an evening.

Highest Recorded Temperature

In recent times, the highest temperature ever recorded in Lanzarote during September is 40.5°C which was recorded on September 6th 1986. The lowest temperature which has ever been recorded on the island during this month is 15.5°C which was recorded on September 23rs in 1983.

Average Sea Temperature

Across the month, Lanzarote receives an average of 0mm of rainfall! Precipitation is very unlikely across the Canary Islands at this time of year, but if you are unlucky enough to get some rainfall during your holiday, it will most probably be drizzle or moderate rain.

On the other hand, September 2008 was the wettest September for a long time, when Lanzarote received 14.9l/m2 of rainfall across the month.

What clothes to take to Lanzarote in September

I think this is about more what not to take! The weather is still warm and it's unlikely to rain. So if you're staying in the tourist hotspots of Playa Blanca or Costa Teguise it's going to be hot. Just shorts, T-shirts and swimwear should suffice. However, if you're going to the north where the island is particularly windy, a lightweight coat or windbreaker would be a good idea.

Weather Hazards

The only weather conditions you really need to be wary of when visiting Lanzarote in September are calimas and siroccos. These are the local names for aggressive sand storms blown over to Lanzarote from the west coast of Africa. Whilst calimas and siroccos don't pose any real dangers for most of the year, they can be quite serious during September, when sand in the air considerably reduces visibility and temperatures can rise up to 20°C higher than normal.

Lanzarote Beaches For September

September is one of the best times of the year to hit the beach in Lanzarote, when the temperatures and high and the beaches aren't as busy as they are in the summer months. La Garita is found in the middle of Arrieta and features soft golden sand which gradually slopes into the clean and clear sea.

Things to do in Lanzarote in September

Sport Fishing Lanzarote

September is one of the best months of the year for tuna and big game fishing. So if you're a keen angler, don't pass up the chance to go on a big game fishing trip during your holiday. Sport Fishing Lanzarote is one of the best sports fishing excursion groups on the island and offers all sorts of shark and big game fishing trips. You can opt to join a group fishing trip or if you have a bit of cash to splash, hire the boat and team for yourself and enjoy a private charter trip.

Cueva del Agua

If the September sunshine gets a bit too much for you, seek shelter at Cueva del Agua. These caves are quite hard to navigate, so you're best off exploring the area with a tour guide. The colours and textures of the different rocks inside the caves are the most outstanding aspect, so make sure you don't leave your camera back at the hotel. The whole tour covers around 1km of caves and caverns and is only recommended for the physically fit and those who aren't nervous when it comes to confined spaces.

Windsurf Paradise

Take advantage of the very last of the north eastern trade winds in September and go windsurfing during your holiday. Windsurf Paradise comes highly recommended and offers a variety of windsurfing courses, suitable for beginners, pros and everyone in between. All the classes are videotaped, so not only will you be able to visually learn from your mistakes, but you'll also have a cool souvenir to take home. There is a shop and bar available onsite, so you won't have any problems if you leave your sun cream or sandwiches back at the hotel.
