Lanzarote Beach for May

Playa del Janubio

If you want to try your hand at surfing, head for the remote Playa del Janubio. Whilst this dark, volcanic beach is best known for its incredible surfing opportunities for most of the year, the sea is almost completely calm in summer, making May your last chance to ride the waves. This exposed beach features a reef break with reliable surf which comes from groundswells from the west.

The best winds come from east northeast and the beach break provides both left and right handers. Because great surfs are available at all stages of the tide, you'll always be able to catch the waves whatever time of day you visit. Make sure you keep an eye out for the rocks in the line up when surfing in order to avoid injury. Due to the intense winds and lack of facilities, this beach is best left to the surfers, not the sunbathers.

Surf School Lanzarote At Playa del Janubio

Although the waves tend to calm down around Playa del Janubio in May, the waves and swells around the rest of the island are just beginning to become strong and consistent and the wind conditions are at their peak during this month. This makes May the perfect time to get to grips with wind-based water sports. Surf School Lanzarote is known as "Europe's finest surf school" and offers beginner surf courses which cover types of rips, wave info, surfing history, surfboard design, surfing rules, how tides work, surfing fitness, types of surf spots, surf prediction, catching waves, paddling techniques and places to surf.

Classes are held in small groups of 1-8 people, with soft boards for total beginners and fibreglass boards for more intermediate levels. Everyone learns their first techniques on the sand before heading into the sea a few days later.
