What's the Weather like in Elounda in August

August is the high tourist season for Elounda, Crete, and the beaches and bars can sometimes get crowded, although not as crowded as other resorts on the island. When everyone is out having fun, the atmosphere in the town is fun and enjoyable and is a good time to mix with other visitors and the locals.

Temperature

This month is also one of the hottest of the year, similar to July, with average temperatures at around 250C, and average high and low temperatures ranging from 210C at night to 280C during the day. The hottest temperature recorded here was 370C and the lowest was a mild 230C.

Rainfall

It is the dry season here in August, and the average rainfall in this month is only 2mm falling over the month, making it one of the driest months of the year along with July. The area has a similar climate to Monaco. The chance of seeing any rain while visiting now is just 3% and this is more likely to occur towards the end of the month. Rain may be light or moderate and thunderstorms may occur occasionally at this time of year. The highest rainfall seen at this time of year was 129mm over the course of the month.

Average Sunshine Hours

Temperatures are gradually starting to cool towards the end of the month. The days are long, but starting to gradually decrease in length. There are 13 hours of sunshine each day, making it a lovely time of year to enjoy the long light evenings and spending time with family or friends. Sun rises in August at around 6.30am and sets at 8.30pm.

Cloud Cover

The skies are normally very clear, with few clouds around and cloud cover at a low 3%. This gradually increases later in the month, but there is a good chance of blue skies during a visit at this time of year.

Humidity

There is a fitness centre on-site as well as a restaurant, snack bar and sauna. The resort is located just 500m from the town centre with many shops and restaurants to choose from.

Athina Rooms

The Athina Rooms are located 100m from Plaka beach. These self-catering apartments offer a full kitchenette with fridge and kitchenware, Wifi throughout, air-conditioning, a patio to relax on during hot August days, and a sun terrace. It is located close to town and restaurants in the area, while guests can rent bicycles for exploring further afield.

 

Beach in Elounda for August

Plaka Beach

For a different beach experience, head to Plaka beach. This pebbly beach is situated in the fishing village of Plaka and overlooks the beautiful island of Spinalonga. Despite not being sandy, there are sunbeds for people to use, the swimming is great and there are many taverns in the local area for a late beach drink. When the sea temperatures reach 260C in August, this is a great alternative to the sandy, busier beaches to swim and relax in the sun while experiencing a little local culture in the village.

Rudi's Bar

For a few drinks with friends in the afternoon or evening, go to Rudi's bar just across from the beach in Elounda. Run by an English couple, they have imported British drinks, show all the major sporting events, play great tunes and offer a friendly and welcoming spot for a few beers or a carafe of wine. Go there for lunch and enjoy good home-cooked food while admiring the views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Marilena

The popular restaurant Marilena is a traditional Greek restaurant owned by two Greek brothers, was established in 1977. This restaurant serves high quality food in a unique atmosphere, with alfresco dining in the vine garden in the rear of the restaurant. This location has long been known as one of the finest restaurants in the area and is best known for its quality selection of mezze, a great way to sample the many dishes on offer.

Perigalis Restaurant

Another great place for top quality dining is the Perigalis restaurant, a popular place for dinner in Elounda. The service is friendly and efficient, the food is amazing and the price is great value. The family run restaurant has an authentic, relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, with home cooked meals the speciality. This is a very popular place with locals as well as tourists and the sea view makes this a special destination for dinner when staying in Elounda.
