Osteria delle Tre Panche
Osteria delle Tre Panche is the ideal dining venue for truffle lovers. This small restaurant provides diners which a huge variation of truffles, some of which are served on their own and some of which are combined into other dishes, such as truffle beef tartare and artichoke pie with truffles. There is also a handful of typical Italian dishes made without truffles, such as beef ragu and fried veal Milanese, for those not into the powerful ingredient. Due to its very limited seating, reservations are a must if you want to dine here.
Un Caffe
For something more budget-friendly, try Un Caffe. This minute bar features cosy Bohemian décor and serves a range of quality Italian coffees such as espressos and cappuccinos alongside local wines which are available by the glass. The short menu features a choice of sandwiches all of which are freshly prepared with local ingredients. The only downside is that because the café is so small, you might end up sharing your table with other visitors.
Things to Do in Florence in June
Piazza del Duomo
Piazza del Duomo is one of the most-visited historical sites in the world, home to 13 major attractions. The most impressive attraction here is the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral (the fourth largest church in Europe), followed by Giotto's Bell Tower, the Baptistery of St John, the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo and the Loggia del Bigallo.
The historical attractions are peppered with several cafes, bars and restaurants, giving you plenty of places to re-energise during your visit. Since the Piazza del Duomo is one of Florence's top attractions, it will get very busy in June especially toward the end of the month when the kids are off school so do your best to visit early in the morning in order to avoid the crowds and get the best photos.
Baptistery of San Giovanni
Whilst you're at the Piazza del Duomo, stop by the Baptistery of San Giovanni. Also known as the Baptistry of Saint John or the Florence Baptistery in English, this religious structure is located in the centre of both the Piazza di San Giovanni and the Pizza del Duomo. It's classed as an octagonal minor basilica and is one of the oldest buildings in the city, dating back to 1059, when construction first began.
The attraction is best known for being home to three sets of bronze doors decorated with relief sculptures which were crafted by Lonrenzo Ghiberti, Andrea Pisano and Michelangelo. Other highlights of the Piazza include the monumental tomb of Antipope John XXIII by Michelozzo Michelozzi and Donatello, mosaic marble pavement and mosaic ceiling which dates back to 1225 and depicts scenes from the Last Judgement.
Church of Orsanmichele
Located on Via Calzaiuoli, the Church of Orsanmichele was originally built as a grain market in 1337 before it was converted into a church between 1380 and 1404. On the ground floor of the inside of the building you'll find the 13th century arches which used to shape the grain market, whilst on the outside you'll find copies of 14 architecturally designed niches built between 1399 and 1430.
These niches were built in stone and bronze by competing guilds and depict various saints, as well as the Madonna. If you want to see the original niches, you'll need to visit the museum on the upper floor of the church which is open on Mondays between 10am and 5pm.
Mercato Centrale
Designed by Giovanni Mengoni in 1874, Mercato Centrale is a huge indoor market, located in between Piazza del Mercato Centrale, Via Panicale, Via Sant'Antonio and Via dell'Ariento. Here you'll find a huge selection of Tuscan cooking ingredients, including fresh fish and seafood, meat, fruits, vegetables, nuts, spices, pastries, truffles and cheeses all of which are locally-sourced and well-priced.
In addition to selling raw ingredients, there are also many bars, restaurants and cafes on the second floor of the market, which specialise in traditional Florentine dishes, pasta, pizza, burgers and vegan dishes. To get the most out of your experience, make sure you go there hungry!
