Zante is a Greek island located in the Ionian Sea, 20km (12 miles) off the west coast of Greece. The capital city bears the same name as the island, which is also known as Zakynthos.

TYPES OF HOLIDAYS

Zante has been a popular holiday destination for many years as it boasts excellent weather and beautiful scenery all just three to four hours flight time from the UK.

This means the length of your stay can be as short or as long as you desire, with mini breaks or seven-night stays being very popular, as well as much longer holidays of two or three weeks.

There are accommodation and activities catering to every type of holiday maker, from the club 18-30 crowd to families to older travellers.

BEST TIME TO GO

Zante enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, with warm, sunny summers and cool, wetter winters. The best time of year to visit would be in the summer months of May to October. At this time you can enjoy the best of the glorious sunshine, and all the major attractions and hotels are open for business.

Prices are naturally higher during the summer season, and you may wish to visit in the winter months of November to April. For the best offers you can aim to visit near the start of the season in April or May, or when it is winding down in September and October.

SIGHTS TO SEE

Zante contains numerous hidden treasures which have to be seen, such as the Blue Caves around Cape Skinari, named because of the deep blue reflection of the sea on their brilliant white surface.

One of the most famous sights on the island is Navagio Beach. The word "navagio" means shipwreck in Greek and the cove is so named as the small beach contains the wreck of the MV Panagiotis, which is said to have been a smuggler vessel that ran aground in 1980.

There are several historic churches and monasteries that date back hundreds of years. Saint Dionysios Church is a must see and is named for the patron saint of the island. Here you can see a mix of Byzantine and Occidental architecture, while inside you can marvel at a number of icons and entirely gold painted interior.

And the Venetian Castle, just outside Zante Town, dates from the 17th century. Here you can see a number of ruins and is worth visiting for its spectacular views of the surrounding area.

ACTIVITIES

Families will enjoy spending time at one of several aqua parks in Zante, with Tsilivi Water Park in Tsilivi being the newest and most popular. Here the kids can enjoy the water slides while the adults relax poolside on a sun bed.

Fun for all the family can also be found at one of the many mini golf courses in Zante. These fun and inventive courses include Kalamaki Crazy Golf and Fantasy Mini Golf in Argassi and Tsilivi.

The best place to head to for water sports is St. Nikolas Beach in Vassilikos, where you will find activities such as jetskiing, waterskiing and the banana boat. The best places that offer these activities are the Vasilikos Water Sports Centre and Alykanas Watersports in Alykes Bay.

Water sports are however not allowed in Kalamaki and the Bay of Laganas due to conservation reasons.

Scuba diving is a firm favourite with such a huge range of marine life to see, and you can hire equipment and receive lessons from centres such as Eurodivers and Diver's Paradise in Kalamaki.

BEACHES

The beaches of Alikes and Alikanas join together as one 3km sandy beach, just north east of Zante. This a great place to base yourself as it is close to both the Blue Caves and Navagio Beach. Families will also be very comfortable here as there are plenty of amenities nearby and the water is shallow and calm.

Argasi Beach, just south of Zante, is a busy stretch of sand very popular with younger holiday makers due to the abundance of bars and clubs nearby!

Navagio Beach is of course famous for its shipwreck, and though this makes the beach unique, the beautiful white cliffs, turquoise waters and secluded location mean this is simply a stunning spot to visit.

And if you are looking for something unspoilt you should visit Porto Roma in south east Zante. There are a couple of tavernas nearby but the area is still rugged and fairly secluded.

NIGHTLIFE

The main clubbing areas in Zante are located in Argasi and Laganas, and there is a huge range to choose from.

The most popular bars in Argasi can be found on the main street.

Laganas features the MUST Sports Bar and Waikiki Cocktail Bar and Club.

ACCOMMODATION

Zante is a busy and popular resort and so offers a wide range of accommodation to suit everybody.

The Zante Star in Tsilivi is one of the most popular resorts on the island. Offering self catering apartments in a beautiful setting, there is also an outdoor pool and regular Greek nights in the bar!

The Venus Hotel is just a short walk from the main strip in Kalamaki and offers a range of suites with an outdoor pool, Greek and Mediterranean restaurant, as well as a pool bar and lounge that hosts regular themed nights.

The Arkadia Hotel just outside Zante town is great for families and is located right on the beachfront, while the Castelli Hotel in Laganas offers a tranquil location right next to the main shops and bars of the town.
