A national Greek Orthodox feast that coincides with New Year’s Day, honouring St Basil the Great. In Zakynthos, the day is marked by church services, family gatherings and the cutting of the vasilopita (St Basil’s cake).

New Year’s Day – Town of Zakynthos & Seafront 🗓
New Years Day coincides with the festival of Saint Basil. As Zante is renowned as a party destination, most people will probably be spending the day in bed, recovering from the night before! However, if you want to make the most of New Year's Day why not go for a walk along one of Zante's many stunning islands including Gerakaks, Kalamaki or Makris Gialos.

Epiphany & Blessing of the Waters (Theophany) 🗓
One of the most important Greek Orthodox celebrations. Priests lead a procession to the harbour where the Holy Cross is thrown into the sea and retrieved by swimmers. Crowds gather along the waterfront, followed by church services and community gatherings. Zakynthos hosts one of the Ionian Islands’ most atmospheric ceremonies.

Saint Chrysostomos is commemorated in Greek Orthodoxy on 13 January. Local churches on Zakynthos hold special services and many families visit their parish in the morning, often followed by small communal meals.
