For those that want to enjoy the splendour of Washington DC before the full heat of the summer weather arrives, the climate in April is superb.
The days of driving rain and snowfall are long forgotten, but the hot humid weather of July and August is still a long time off.
This means there are plenty of sunny, warm days in April, with plenty of opportunity to get out and see the sights.
Overall, April is likely to experience as much rain as falls in the previous three months of the year. The precipitation is spread over approximately 14 days, so any rainfall is likely to be short lived, ensuring plenty of good weather.
Long, bright days will enjoy an average of 8 hours of daily sunshine in April, with average temperatures shooting up to a very welcoming 14°C.
Traditionally average highs through the month will reach 19°C on an almost daily basis. Although the thermometer did climb up to 35°C in April 2002, providing the hottest April in history.
For those that want to avoid the heat, it is wiser to travel during the first part of the month. By the time the calendar nears May, some days can be very warm indeed.
Conversely, average low temperatures, especially at night, can still provide a touch of chill in the air. Usually temperatures will fall to an average of 8°C at the coldest part of the night, so it is always wise to be prepared for the odd cooler evening at this time of the year.
April is a time for the restaurants to open their external areas and for Washington DC to look forward to the hot and balmy summer days that are forecast. But if you want to see the bright, fresh side of the capital without worrying about over-heating, April is the perfect time to visit.
Where to Stay
By the time the warm April weather sets in, DC Lofty becomes a very popular place to stay in Washington DC. Situated in a friendly neighbourhood, this guest hostel is spacious, clean and very cost effective. Friendly staff are always on hand to ensure you make the most of your stay. For a more luxurious type of accommodation, make a booking at the Sofitel in Lafayette Square. This high class chain of hotels has a reputation for outstanding facilities, excellent service and ideal locations, and their hotel in Washington DC is no exception. The rooms are large and well equipped, and just two blocks from the White House, it is in the perfect location. Appreciate the change in climate by enjoying a drink at the outside bar. The food in the onsite restaurant is delicious and not too expensive. But with many other facilities just a short walk away, everyone gets what they want from the Sofitel.
If you are able to qualify for Air Force accommodation during your stay, then a trip to the Presidential Inn at Joint Base Andrews is not to be missed. Unlike many other air force facilities, the rooms in this base are spacious, very well kept and, of course, the prices are unmissable. Most rooms offer a separate fully equipped kitchen, with multiple bedroom options. Though the décor is a little outdated, the cleanliness of the rooms and the friendliness of the staff more than makes up for it. Its close proximity to the airport and a neighbouring golf course, ensure you really couldn't ask for anything more. When it comes to DOD accommodation, this is one of the best.
Restaurants and Nightlife
The Capital Grille is an exceptional place to eat in Washington DC. The food is incredible, the service exceptional and the portions are massive. Wine is ordered from the interactive app on the iPad, although the staff are always on hand to provide their own recommendations. The dim lighting ensures a very intimate atmosphere and perfectly complements the artwork on the walls. Opt for the Onion Soup for an incredible entrée and choose from the range of steaks and grills for the main course. Or for something lighter, the Lobster salad is divine. Remember to leave room for desert. No one should leave without tasting their incredible chocolate cake with brandy cherries.
Whether you come to Fado Irish Pub to enjoy the Saturday morning football on the TV's or for a traditional fish and chip night out, you will always get a warm welcome in this authentic Irish hostelry. Guinness is on tap, the beers are flowing and there are lots of promotions on the Whiskeys behind the bar to get you in the mood. The service is welcoming and the décor is a home away from home, directly from the green isle itself.
When you want a change from traditional American food styles, take a trip to the Amsterdam Falafel Shop. You can build your own concoctions from the ground up, to make sure you get all the best flavours. Or opt for a recommended signature dish to experience something truly unique. The service is quick and very friendly, while the quality of the ingredients is absolutely superb.
Things to Do
Though the Newseum is not free, like many of the national Museums in Washington DC, the entrance fee provides admission for two days, and you will need every minute of it. From the 4D cinema to the 911 exhibit and the rotating exhibition displaying the moment the Berlin Wall came down. The Newseum has taken the most poignant times in recent history and put them together into a thought provoking and insightful collection of displays. The food area is surprisingly pleasant and you will want to take your camera just take photos of the view. For anyone interested in the progress of the media over the years or the developments in American history, a visit to the Newseum is unmissable.
Golf is a massive part of American Culture, and when in Washington DC, a trip to East Potomac Golf Course has to be on the cards. This public golf course provides just enough insight into what it is like to be the Golden Bear of the US, but with enough fun to keep even the youngest players entertained. Set within a beautiful landscape, there are plenty of trees that provide shade in the warmer days of April. With three different courses to choose from, there is something for everyone.
