Valencia is situated on Spain's south eastern coast, known as the Costa del Azahar or Orange Blossom Coast. The area is a popular holiday destination thanks to its wonderful scenery, beautiful beaches and vibrant ambience. Of course, the weather is also a draw, with a typical Mediterranean climate consisting of hot, dry summers and mild winters.

Temperatures

May is one of the last months of spring, seeing warm and sunny weather before the temperatures soar in summer. The plants are in bloom at this time of the year, so you can enjoy the beautiful views of a lush and scenic area. The average daily temperature in Valencia in May is around 18°C but high temperatures can reach 23°C on warmer days. Temperatures can drop on an evening, but shouldn't fall below 13°C in May.

Sunshine

In terms of sunshine, May is one of the sunniest months of the year, just behind July's 13 hours, with an average of 12 hours of sunshine per day. There is a 51% chance of a sunny day in Valencia in May, so you should be able to enjoy some sunshine on one of Valencia's beaches on your holiday. During this month, it is also becoming increasing possible to swim in the sea around the coast of Valencia.

The hotel sits at the heart of Valencia, just 350 yards from Valencia Train Station and Valencia Town Hall and a 10-minute walk to Valencia Cathedral. Rooms are equipped with free Wi-Fi, satellite TV, a minibar and a safe.

If you're on a tight budget, El Cid Hotel won't break the bank at around £32 per night. The guesthouse offers simple but comfortable accommodation in the centre of Valencia's popular El Carmen district, surrounded by many lively bars and restaurants. A private or shared bathroom are available, depending on the price you want to pay.

 

Valencia Beaches in May

The warmer weather in April means it is a great time to visit one of the many beautiful beaches that Valencia has to offer. If you're staying in the city, the closest beaches are just a 15 minute journey away and are easily reachable by bus. The average temperature of the sea in Valencia rises to around 18°C in May.

El Saler beach is a beautiful and relatively unspoiled beach located to the south of the city. The natural sandy beach is around 6km long and is surrounded by wonderful sand dunes for holiday makers to explore. The peaceful beach is a great place to relax and admire the lovely views over the ocean, while the more active tourist can play a game of golf at the nearby Campo de Golf El Saler.

Bars and Restaurants

Valencia offers an incredible eating and drinking scene for tourists to take advantage of. With bars, cafés and restaurants lining the streets of this city, there is always something on offer that caters to your tastes. 

Located in the centre of Valencia on the Gran Vía del Marqués del Turia, St Patrick's Irish Bar is the perfect place for a refreshing stop off after exploring the sights. The bar serves a wide variety of drinks, from Irish whiskeys to beers on tap to imported bottled beers. There's plenty to keep guests entertained here, including TVs, pool tables and a dart board.

For food, you can't come to Valencia and not try the region's famous paella, which was invented in the city. If you're feeling adventurous you can even try the traditional paella Valenciana which consists of rice, chicken, rabbit, land snails and beans. For an authentic taste of Spanish cuisine, La Pepica is a great choice. This popular seafood restaurant is located by the beach and is renowned for its paella which draws in celebrities including matadors, artists, and film stars.

If you're a jazz lover, head to Jimmy Glass Jazz Bar located in the lively El Carmen area of Valencia. The bar has a chilled out feel where guests can relax with a drink and watch some live music after dinner.

Things to do in Valencia in May

With the lush landscape and warm weather, May is one of the ideal times to explore the beautiful scenery Valencia has to offer, as well as the many public parks and gardens. At this time of the year, they should be looking their best. Turia Gardens is a green space that stretches over 9km through the centre of Valencia and was once a river that's now been redirected. The free-to-enter gardens feature open spaces, sporting activities, ponds and fountains, making them a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Like most months, May sees some traditional Spanish fiestas in Valencia. Fiesta del Cristo del Grau is a maritime event in the city, that sees a statue of Christ transported by boat from the Santa Maria del Mar Church and then along the streets.
