August is a month of celebrations and f course, more fun under the sun, in Thessaloniki and the whole of Greece. The average temperature floats around 25 degrees Celsius and daily highs can go above 30. This month is hot and should be enjoyed with enough refreshments and a lot of sun block as rainfall is expected only for about 4 days and with rainfall of less than 20mm.
Mid-August, in 15th of the month, the celebrations for the Assumption of Mary are held across the city and an amazing place to be when that happens is the suburban area of Mihaniona. Great folk feasts and week-long celebrations are held in Mihaniona and everyone is welcome to eat, drink and socialize a week before the assumption up to a week after it has passed.
Back to the city of Thessaloniki, in August there is a lot going on in the center too. The Capsis hotel is a great and affordable place to stay during the hottest months. With unbelievable room and hotel-wide air conditioning and cool beverages at dirt-cheap prices, the Capsis will keep you cool during the hot month of August.
The Magic Park, Thessaloniki's best theme park is amazing this time of the year. The theme park has a host of water-based games including a waterfall-roller coaster and going there with your bathing suit (or clothes you don't mind getting wet) will give you hours of fun AND keep you cool. The Magic Park is great for children in summer too as all indoors areas are air conditioned and there is a plethora of water games to be had there.
If you are passing by the port in August be sure to check out the famous Greek fish and chips restaurant "Ta Mpakaliarakia tou Aristou". The name may be confusing to everyone except Greek people but the taste is an amazing fusion of Greek and British cuisines that will put a smile on your face.
