What's the Weather Like in Tenerife South in May
Rain
May in spring time is the last of the wet months where you would be unfortunate to see any rain on your holiday. The monthly average rainfall is just 1mm falling on 1 day in the month. This has dropped from the December high of 35mm falling over 5 to 7 days. In summer there will be no rainfall with the monthly averages dropping to nil.
Temperature
The high day time temperature is rising to a pleasant 23°C during May that is good for any outdoor activities whether on the beach or inland around the national parks. Average temperatures hover around 21°C but night time can still cool off to around 17°C. Night time temperatures are slowly increasing from winter lows of under 10°C and will hit a high of 17°C while heading to the low 20's in summer months.
Average Sea Temperature and Sunshine Hours
Ocean temperature has risen to 20°C and will warm towards the end of a month another degree or two as it heads to a summer high of 23°C. The sunshine hours have increased from a low 7 hours a day in December to 11 hours and heading towards 12 for the summer months.
Tenerife South Hotels in May
All of the accommodation will be open and you will have many places to choose from. There are the big resorts such as Playa de las Americas and los Cristianos where you can choose from a variety of accommodation styles. If you are after a little luxury on your holiday stay at the Ritz-Carlton Abama with its 7 swimming pools, golf course and more than a dozen cafes, bars and restaurants.
If you don't want to stay on the beach try the Parador de las Cañadas del Teide located in the national park at Mount Tiede. With more than 30 rooms all with private bathrooms, this is an ideal way from it all mountain lodge experience. There are views of the cone and the major crater and it has its own restaurant and bar.
For the golfer there are several places to stay at close to or on golf courses in Tenerife South. Choose from Golf del Sur, Amarilla Golf Course and Golf Costa Adeje all with accommodation available.
Tenerife South Beach for May
There are some nudist beaches in Tenerife South and one is located at Playa de las Patos and Playa del Poza. These two coves are at the foot of steep cliffs and you can camp on the beach if you like for complete privacy. There is a restaurant on the cliff top but it is a scramble back up once you are down on the beach so take a picnic lunch along.
Close to Tenerife South Airport is El Medano beach that is a great surfing and kite surfing beach with larger waves and bigger swells. It is a popular spot for both swimmers and surfers with lots of amenities nearby.
Playa Los Abrigos is also near the airport and if you hire a car you can drive yourself to the smaller beaches. This is a small beach with some shingle and this is not necessarily a tourist beach so will not be as busy as others.
Las Galletas is another picturesque beach away from the most popular tourist places. You can rent hammocks and beach umbrellas and there are showers to wash the salt and sand off.
Bars and Restaurants
The little community at El Medano has some great eateries along the coast including Italian, Japanese and Chinese restaurants.
The beach at Las Galletas has great eateries including Arona and the Alborada Beach Club. This is part of the Costa del Silencio where there are many themed pubs including CC Trebol and CC El Chapparal.
The popular resorts of Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos have many cafes, bars and restaurants to choose with cuisines from Italy, Greek, Spain and Lebanon. For good French cuisine and family friendly food visit Bistro Bolle and Tijil on the Costa del Silencio.
Also here is Totem that attracts people back year after year for the Spanish cuisine and friendly atmosphere. If you fancy a pizza or good Italian food try the Dye Café and the Napoli Lounge still in the Costa del Silencio. This part of the island has exceptional food at family friendly places.
Things to do in Tenerife South in May
Take the Tenerife Island tour if you a spare day as the tour lasts 9 hours. Check the days of the week for an English speaking guide, usually Friday. The tour picks up at all Tenerife South Hotels and drops you back there at the conclusion of the tour. This is a comprehensive tour that shows you the best the island has to offer.
There are several golf courses in the south all offering a variety of playing courses including the black volcanic sand bunkers at Amarilla. Other golf courses are at Costa Adeje, Abama Golf, Gold las Americas, and Centro de golf Los Palos and Golf del sur.
