Right in the heart of historic Jaffa and just minutes from its bustling port area, Andromeda Hill Holiday Suites is a good self-catering option for independently-minded travellers. It has a modern gym, spa and swimming pool and all apartments are spacious and air-conditioned and have fully equipped kitchenettes. Some have balconies with city views. There is an onsite restaurant and 24-hour security.

Leonardo Boutique Hotel Tel Aviv

The Leonardo Boutique Hotel Tel Aviv is a new hotel in the business district of Ramat Hachayal ten minutes from Tel Aviv city centre with great city views, particularly from its bar and gym. If it's shopping you like, then one of Tel Aviv's best locations Ramat Aviv Mall is right next door and restaurants and bars are all around. The hotel has a restaurant serving breakfast and snacks throughout the day and a cosy bar.

Crowne Plaza City Center TLV

Crowne Plaza City Centre TLV is a modern hotel right next to the Azrieli shopping centre with a great restaurant and sushi bar on its 11th floor. Unusually for a Tel Aviv hotel, it also has a spectacular Olympic-sized indoor swimming pool, as well as a large fitness centre. Rooms have views across Tel Aviv and the majority have a PC and media centre with webcam. There's a free shuttle bus to the beach each day.

Bars and Restaurants

Imperial Cocktail Bar 

Tucked away in the imposing hotel of the same name, the Imperial Cocktail Bar is an upmarket venue with an international feel, meaning that you could be in New York or Paris once you step inside. It serves Asian-colonial food and the music on offer ranges from jazz to rock. Don't miss the daily happy hour between 6-8pm when drinks including great cocktails are all half price.

Abraham Hostel Bar 

A hostel is not the usual place you head for when you're looking for a bar. But the one at Abraham Hostel in central Tel Aviv is well worth a visit. It's relaxed and friendly and holds a dizzying range of events, including cinema nights and big sports games on its large screen. There's a pool table and a range of drinks which are cheap and plentiful.

Zakaim

Hakaim is another renowned vegan restaurant that is also popular with non-vegans due to its tasty food. Harel Zakaim's Iranian-influenced restaurant is hidden down an alley off Allenby St and serves up dishes such as Persian rice cooked with crispy potatoes, red peppers stuffed with vegetables and lentils and vegan pizzas with chips served in a brown paper bag. You can order sharing plates to enjoy a range of dishes with friends.

Port Sa'id

Port Sa'id is a trendy restaurant and bar next to the Great Synagogue. This is a hipster joint so prepare for lots of waxed beards and tattoos among the many regulars. The restaurant serves Middle East dishes and has a library of vinyl records on shelves and a huge range of drinks on offer. There is no English menu, but the waiters will be happy to interpret for you.

Things to do in Tel Aviv in October

Gan Meir Park

Another of Tel Aviv's lovely green spaces is Gan Meir Park in King George St, which has picnic benches for lazy family gatherings and plenty of shade from the sun. Dog walkers are confined to a special dog run area, there's a large pond, a basketball court, outdoor gym and lots more to keep all ages occupied. In the centre of the park is the Landwer Café and the Tel Aviv Gay Centre.

Jabotinsky Institute

This Jabotinsky Institute was founded in 1937 and provides a fascinating insight on the underground group known as the Ergun, or Etzel, founded in 1931 by Ze'ev Jabotinsky in 1931 in British-held Palestine to fight for a Jewish state. It tells the story of Jabotinsky's political activities, how the Jewish Legion was formed to serve in the British Army in World War One and many other exploits of the Jewish nationalist movement.

Immanuel Church

Another of the many fascinating and historic buildings of Jaffa is the small but perfectly formed Immanuel Church. This was originally a German Templar church, but is now Lutheran and is still thriving today with services on Saturday and Sunday. Dating from the early 1900s, this is a rare piece of European religious architecture in the former American-German district of Jaffa. Its classic organ is used for regular concerts.

HaPisga Garden

The Haspiga Garden is a pretty haven from the hustle and bustle of Jaffa full of tropical plants and trees and with amazing views over the seafront and the Mediterranean. There is an outdoor theatre at its centre which is the location for free music events during the summer months. Haspiga is Hebrew for summit and it's a perfect place to capture great photos of the old port and Tel Aviv beyond.
