What's the Weather Like in Stockholm in January

Stockholm, the capital and the largest city of Sweden, lies on the south-eastern coast of the country. It is not only the most populous city in Sweden, but it is also the most populated metropolis in Scandinavia. Sometimes referred to as the Venice of the North, Stockholm is the cultural, economical and political hub of Sweden and possibly even Scandinavia. Despite its proximity to the Arctic, the city has relatively mild weather conditions compared to its neighbours.

Temperature

In winter temperatures average around -3°C, whilst in summer day time temperatures reach an average high of 22°C. The distinctive weather conditions and the natural splendours of the archipelago, make Stockholm a popular holiday destination.

Stockholm is the trendiest city of Sweden. With its breath-taking landscape and alluring architecture, the city does not fail to impress visitors throughout the year. For those who adore wintry climates, January is the perfect month to head to Stockholm. It is one of the coldest months of the year, with temperatures dropping down to -5°C at night. During the day, the average high temperature is -1°C. Overall, the daily average temperature is -3°C this month.

Sunshine

January is one of the coldest and darkest months of the yearnly February has similar weather conditions, in fact. There are merely 2 hours of sunshine per day on average, which is by far the annual minimum. However, as gloomy as the days can be, the blanket of snow that covers the city makes it appear somewhat bright and definitely magical.

One of the main reasons for this wintry darkness is the fact that the days are quite short this time of year. In January, the length of the days varies between 6.11 hours on 1st January to 7.58 hours on 31st January.

Rain

Stockholm receives 39mm of precipitation in January, spread out over 18 days. Almost all of this falls in the form of snow. Moderate snow falls on 44% of those 18 days with precipitation, while light snow is seen on 25% of those days. Moderate rain, on the other hand, doesn't occur on more than 15% of those days.

Vasa Museum

The most visited museum in Scandinavia, the Vasa Museum houses the massive warship, which sank on the shores of Stockholm in 1628. The Vasa is the only preserved ship in the world that dates back to the 17th century. Ornamented with decorative carvings, more than 95 percent of the ship remains original.
