March is the month in St Julians that sees the most dramatic change in the weather.
At the beginning of the month, the region is very much entrenched in the usual winter climate, typified by short, heavy downpours and less warmth than the average day in Malta.
However, by the third week of March, the rain has more than likely come to an end, and it is often the case that no further rain will be seen here before August is out.
This means the sun can break out and warm up the region, with the forecast of another beautiful summer to come.
On average 11 days of March are likely to experience some rain, but they are nearly always towards the beginning of the month. This means that the expected 40mm of precipitation are nearly done by the end of the third week and much drier weather is on its way.
When the sun comes out average highs of up to 17°C are usual for this time of the year, making it possible to go to the beach, go out walking or just enjoy some nice early warm weather. And with an average of 10 hours of daily sunshine to enjoy, there's plenty of fun to be had.
Thanks to the volume of rain experienced over the core winter season, while the sun is warm, the countryside is still very luscious in March. This makes the whole of the island spring into life.
Sea temperatures also reach their peak of 29°C during March, meaning this is actually one of the warmest months to be in the water.
Average lows still remain at a very mild 10°C throughout. But for those that have come to St Julian for the wealth of nightlife, it's barely noticeable. Instead you can enjoy long, warmer, drier days, and a fabulous time to be on the island of Malta.
Where to Stay
While the Maltese people have always been known for their very accommodating nature, the staff at the Argento Hotel take service to a whole new level. Nothing is too much trouble for the guests at this beautiful hotel, ensuring everyone feels incredibly welcome. As the hotel is a five minute walk from the centre of Paceville and St Julians, it is not as noisy as others located closer. But every amenity is still very accessible. On warmer days in March, take a dip in the roof top pool. Or enjoy an adventure on the bus that stops at the bottom of the hill. The quality of the food served on site is simply exquisite. But with so many pubs, restaurants and bars within easy walking distance, you will be spoilt for choice.
Chez LouLou Guest House is located directly in the middle of the party area of Paceville offering the perfect location for those that want to be up all night. The rooms are clean and have all basic amenities. There's full air conditioning for when the weather gets warm and there's even a shared kitchen if you get hungry after a busy night out. For couples, groups or even single visitors, the location and value for money Chez LouLou can offer makes it the ideal place to stay.
As the name suggest, the Metropole Budget Hostel is a great place to stay for a low cost holiday to St Julians. While the amenities are basic, the rooms are clean and extremely cosy. But just watch out for the pubs and clubs in the street they can go on into the early hours of the next day. For those that like to party, this is the ideal place to stay on a budget. And the food on offer is definitely worthy of much higher priced accommodation. But if you are looking for a quiet and serene place to relax on a visit to St Julians, the Metropole Budget Hostel should definitely not be on your list.
Things to Do
For a break from the bars, clubs and nightlife in St Julians, take a walk to St. George's Street just behind Spinola Bay. This is the most unspoilt part of the region and a wonderful way to enjoy some traditional culture in Malta. Browse through the local craft shops and quaint little pubs. Or sample some of the incredible food in the range of restaurants along the path. Even in March, the town will start to get busy. But St George's Street is still far more tranquil.
When you've seen all that Malta has to offer, why not take a boat trip to Gozo and enjoy a completely different type of day. This Maltese island is unlike Malta, with far more countryside and a much more laid back atmosphere. Spend some time on one of the many sandy beaches that Gozo has become so famous for. Or take a walk up the mountains and enjoy the view. The weather in March still isn't too warm in Gozo so there's plenty of opportunity to explore.
Restaurants and Nightlife
For a night of heavy duty dancing, make your way to the Dash Club in Paceville. The range of theme nights and special offers mean there's always something going on. And with live music throughout the year, you are never going to be disappointed at Dash. Opt to go on a free entry night to get outstanding value for money. Even on special event nights you still may not have to pay at the door. The drinks are cool and offer good value, so that even the locals like to spend time here. Throw your hands in the air and get out on the floor because when you want to dance, Dash is the place to go.
As the name suggests, the speciality at Impasta is definitely the pasta. But with such a broad selection of dishes on the menu, you will want to come back again and again. All the dishes at this friendly restaurant are freshly made, with a whole host of different grains and sauces to choose from. The portions are generous, and the large sizes are often too big for most people to finish. But with great value for money and an extensive wine list to match, everyone leaves Impasta fully satisfied.
Mellow out with the sounds of high quality Jazz at SJI's Smooth Jazz Inc. This is one of only a very few jazz clubs in St Julian. But the vibe is absolutely right. It's a great place to meet a few new friends. And with a good mix of locals and tourists, there is always someone of interest to talk to. The music is just as mellow as the ambience with live performances regularly. Usually open between Wednesday and Saturday throughout March, all Jazz lovers should definitely give it a go.
