Skiathos, one of the Sporades islands in Greece, shot to fame when it became a filming location for the hit movie Mamma Mia. The island is a quiet, warm and sunny haven in the Aegean Sea.
The island's subtropical Mediterranean climate means winters are generally a lot cooler and a lot wetter than the summer months, but even so, November's weather here is a welcome change from the sub zero conditions back home in the UK. Temperatures vary from 11 to 18 degrees celsius, and there's around 50.5mm of rainfall during the month.
£55 per night will buy travellers a night at the 3* PlazaHotel. Located on olive groves in the Kanapitsa Bay area, the rooms here are spacious by Greek standards, especially the triple room which is ideal for larger groups and families. Rooms have private balconies with outdoor furniture, en suite bathrooms and mini bar. There's a pool onsite, as well as a poolside bar and grill restaurant. Private parking is provided for guests with rental cars.
Enjoy dinner at the nearby TavernaCalma. With both indoor and outdoor seating, this restaurant is perfect no matter what the weather, and serves up traditional Greek cuisine including lamb chops and moussaka.
Animal lovers will enjoy visiting Skiathos, especially the SkiathosDogShelter. Travellers are encouraged to visit the shelter, and are welcome to walk the dogs around the surrounding hills. There's a craft stall here, too, selling locally made t-shirts, keyrings and fridge magnets which are great for souvenirs, and all proceeds go towards providing food, bedding and vaccinations for the dogs.
