Given the yearly round of festivals, celebrations and holidays in Sitges, November is a relatively quiet month. The only major festival is All Saints Day marked on the 1st of the month. This holiday, which has its roots in Christianity, was celebrated out of respect for family members and friends lost during the year. Family of the deceased would ring the cathedral bells all night on this day. Panellets, a treat made from almonds, sugar, eggs and pine fruit is eaten by the celebrants. This dish was meant to give the bell ringers the strength to toll the bell all night.
All Saints Day is also the day of the Castanyada (Spanish chestnut), and you will find vendors on the streets selling hot chestnuts and hot boniatos (sweet orange potatoes). The mosatell, which is a very sweet wine, is normally served with the chestnuts and boniatos.
While this festival has Christian roots, more and more people are making it the equivalent of the American Halloween holiday.
