Mardi Gras, better known as The Carnival in Sitges, is the event that attracts the largest number of people from all around the world to this Spanish coastal town. More than 200,000 people flood the town in the week before lent to attend or participate in the festival, which is meant as a celebration to usher in the severity and restraint that is characteristic of lent.

The festivities always start on a Thursday (Dijous Gras) when the King of the Carnival leads a parade and hallmarks the beginning of festivities. On Saturday s the 'Rua de la Disbauya', which loosely translates to the 'Debauchery Parade' and attracts more than 40 floats with over 2000 people dressed in costumes. It is a very colourful and jubilant affair, though it can lean towards the risqué.

Monday is the extermination parade and drag queens dressed in sombre black or grey, walk the streets in mourning for the end of the celebrations and the death of the King of the Carnival. This is followed by Ash Wednesday where a sardine figurine is buried on the beach to mark the arrival of lent. No fish for forty days!

Because of Sitges' large gay population, the carnival parades double as gay pride and you will see drag queens in the most flamboyant costumes.
