Tourism is a big earner for Spain. Sitges is one of the leading tourist hotspots, especially amongst the gay community as it is one of Europe's most gay-friendly towns.

Though the Festival of Assumption is which is marked on the 15th of August is a national holiday, it is not the major holiday in the town of Sitges, Barcelona. The feast of Barcelona, held for a week between the 21st and the 27th, is the largest and most important in Sitges calendar year because Bartholomew is the town's patron saint.

The festival is referred to as 'Festa Major' (major festival) and is characterized by dances, concerts, and parties of all sorts. It is a very jubilant and celebratory time in the town. There are almost nightly parades playing out the different roles in the story of St. Bartholomew. You will find revellers dressed as devils, dragons, eagles and even giants.

On the night of the 24th, the midpoint of the festival a major fireworks display is held on one of the town's beaches.

The feast of Our Lady of Vinyet is a smaller festival celebrated on the 5th of the month.
