The Similan Islands enjoy moderate temperatures and low rainfall at the beginning of the year, making January one of the most popular months to visit the area. The warmth, sunshine and lack of rain make it nearly perfect weather-wise, especially when compared to the cold and dreary weather much of the Northern Hemisphere experiences this time of the year. The average daily temperature for this month is 28°C (about 82°F), nice and warm for getting out and exploring the islands.
During the heat of the day, you can expect the highs to jump up to 31°C (around 88°F); thankfully, the breezes coming across the sea help temper the heat. In the evenings, the lows drop down to 24°C (about 74°F), offering a respite from the daytime heat. As you're packing for your trip, you'll want to have warm-weather clothing like short-sleeved shirts, shorts and tank tops.
With eight hours of sunshine each day, you'll have ample time to get out and about to see the sights of the island. You won't have to dodge many raindrops, with only 17 mm of rain falling this month, the lowest amount across the entire year. That amount falls over four days in the month, giving you a good chance of avoiding rain completely.
The chance of a cloudy day is 20 percent, so take advantage of the sunny days and head down to the beach. Bring along the sunglasses and a high-SPF sunscreen to protect your skin from the UV rays in this part of southeastern Asia. The water is warm too, with an average sea temperature of 27°C (about 81°F). You'll want to try your hand at scuba diving at one of the many sites surrounding the islands.
Where to Stay
The only place to stay that's actually on the islands, the Similan Islands National Park Bungalows provide rustic accommodations for visitors to the island. The bungalows are located on the island of Koh Miang and along with bungalows, you can also get a tent if you really feel like adventure. The tents come with floor pads, sheets and pillows to keep you as comfortable as possible. If you choose a bungalow, you'll have room for two people and air-conditioning.

Only one restaurant exists on the Similan Islands and is found on the island of Ko Miang. It's part of the National Park Headquarters for the Similan Islands and also includes a souvenir shop. The restaurant serves simple Thai food and is open for lunch and dinner. It's a great place to grab a bite to eat in between time on the two beaches on the island and exploring the jungles and trails.
At the Walker's Inn restaurant in Khao Lak, you'll be treated to a menu with a little bit of everything on it. You can enjoy classic Thai food, as well as Western favourites like steak, burgers and sandwiches. You can even indulge in a full English breakfast, complete with baked beans and tomatoes. In the high season, the restaurant offers an all-you-can-eat barbeque option and it also has themed buffets throughout the week.
With affordable prices and a large menu, the Spinach Restaurant gives guests a taste of traditional Thai cuisine. All of the dishes are homemade and the staff are extra friendly, making you feel welcome. The restaurant has a thatched-covered outdoor seating area so you can enjoy your meal in the warm Thai air. Things to Do
Thanks to the efforts of numerous ecologists and nature lovers, the unspoiled wilderness and wildlife of the Similan Islands has been largely preserved. The islands are home to numerous different types of animals, including various bird species. If bird-watching is a hobby or interest, you'll find excellent opportunities to check out the local feathered friends. Here, you'll find the rare Nicobar Pigeon, as well as the Asian Koel, Hill Myna and Green and Pied Imperial Pigeons.
