It may not be summer on the island of Majorca and in Santa Ponsa, Spain, but thanks to the Mediterranean climate, February is still a fine time of the year to visit if you want to enjoy warm and pleasant winter weather. With a reputation for providing unmitigated sunshine, it's no surprise that Santa Ponsa is such a popular year-round resort among people looking for an escape from colder climates and some winter sun on their break.
After January, February is the second-coldest month of the year. The average temperature is 9°C, which is still pretty warm compared to the temperatures in Britain this time of year. The temperature drops to a chilly 4°C overnight, while in the afternoon it rises to a comfortable 14°C. Both low and high average temperatures are essentially constant throughout the month, with maybe a tiny, barely noticeable increase towards the end. The temperature of the Mediterranean Sea is at its annual low in February. The sea water is now 14°C cold, which is as warm as the maximum afternoon temperature. It will start warming up again in March and rise to its annual maximum of 26°C in August.
The length of the days increases in the course of the month. February 1 is the shortest day of the month with 10.10 hours of daylight, while February 28 is already more than one hour longer, with 11.17 daylight hours. Cloud cover is pretty much as high as it was in January. It reaches its annual maximum of 45% on February 7. No significant increase or decrease in cloud cover is observed in the course of the month.
Relatively high cloud cover and days that are still short are the reasons for the low number of daily sunshine hours in February. Just like in January, there are 7 hours of sunshine per day, which is only one hour more than the annual minimum of 6 hours in December. In the following months, however, the amount of daily sunshine will increase rapidly.
Total rainfall in February is a little less than in January and March, but that's most likely due to the fact that the month is shorter. The total amount of precipitation is 35mm and there are 6 days of rainfall, compared to 37mm and 7 days in January and 36mm and 7 days in March. The average chance of experiencing a rain shower on any given day is 34%, a percentage that doesn't change much in the course of the month. Moderate rain occurs on 49% of the 6 days with rainfall. Drizzle is the second-most common type of precipitation and is observed on 21% of the days with rainfall. Light rain and thunderstorms come in third and fourth, respectively occurring on 13% and 10% of the rainy days.
When holidaying in Santa Ponsa in February, pack for the sunny, warm weather, but also prepare for the occasional rain shower.
