With it's colorful décor and Italian cuisine, Da Valeria is a good spot to stop for a meal or just a couple of drinks while you're in town. From thin-crust pizza to pasta dishes, the menu offers something for everyone. As a bonus, the restaurant also has free Wi-Fi, so you can catch up on news from home while you enjoy your meal.
A favorite of locals, Pubim serves fresh fish, seafood and sandwiches. The lunch special, called the plate of day, typically consists of fish or chicken, rice, chips and a salad for a steal at 2,50 euros. While there, you can enjoy seating outdoors, as well as live music throughout the week.
Things to Do
Not for the faint of heart, flyboarding is an exhilarating way to spend the afternoon in the warm December weather. Flyboard Cabo Verde takes you out in the bay of Santa Maria for a ride on a jet-powered board that flies you high in the air above the water. The sea temps are still warm this time of the year, so after your flight, the water will feel great as you head back into shore.
Near the center of the island sits the capital city of Espargos and Monte Curral. The Monte Curral hill provides you with expansive views of the town and the island. It is accessible by ATV and foot by a narrow road and at the top is a small shop for snacks and souvenirs.
On the western shore of Sal is Fontona, an isolated cove and beach. Popular with locals as a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the towns, it's a great place to take scenic pictures and relax. There are no restaurants, bars or other amenities nearby, so be sure to bring your own food and water.
Dates to Note
With the significant Catholic following on Sal Island, many of the locals celebrate Christmas just like other areas of the world. Typically, you can expect evening Mass on Christmas Eve, the night before, at many of the local churches. Many of the village and towns also decorate for the season with red and green décor.
