Lying in the north of Italy, within the Liguria region is the popular tourist destination of San Remo. While much of Italy hosts a fairly idyllic climate, conditions in San Remo are particularly enjoyable due to its proximity to the Mediterranean and where it lies in the forefront of the Maritime Alps. In places throughout the world where mountain air meets sea air you are met with an enviable microclimate as the crisp winds from the mountain peaks intertwine with the refreshing coastal breezes. The Liguria region as a whole is in a unique and peculiar position, with the whole region seeing a variety of different conditions prevailing due to the effect of the mountains that cross the area.
San Remo is a year round popular destination due to this enviable climate, with winters seeing average daily temperatures of about 10 ºC and summers bring temperatures of about 23 ºC. It is not entirely uncommon for temperatures to rise over 30 ºC, though on the whole temperature extremes are pretty uncommon across summer and winter, due to the moderating affect of the Mediterranean Sea. Like a standard Mediterranean climate, rainfall occurs predominately in the winter and autumn months, San Remo is no exception- rainfall is generally at its highest in November and stays fairly constant throughout winter before dying off almost completely by the end of Spring. By summer, rain is fairly scarce; June only records (on average) 9.9mm of precipitation across the whole month.
The best time to visit San Remo is throughout summer, where you can really get involved in all the beach side activity that takes place- the promenades are alive with activity and the markets are bustling with bargains and interesting finds. The best market can be found on Tuesday and Saturday mornings in Piazza Eroi Sanremesi, and is popular with the locals. Summer brings average highs of 24 ºC to 28 ºC, with July and August brings the hottest days. Minimums come when the winds off the water blow through the region, normally bringing low temperatures of about 21 ºC to 23 ºC - perfect for outdoor activities. While summer temperatures are the best, the remainder of the year hosts very enjoyable mild conditions. You may be caught in an odd shower from October to December, but there certainly isnât a shortage of things to do whilst you wait for the rains to pass- the world famous San Remo casino, built in 1905 is just one way you could pass the time!
