Roscoff receives all four seasons and no extremes of temperature. It has a temperate maritime climate which is largely controlled by the Antlantic Ocean. Roscoffâs coastal location, in the path of the Gulf Stream, means that temperatures are moderated year round, keeping summers cooler and winters warmer than might otherwise be the case. Like any seaside location, strong sea winds mean that weather conditions are highly unpredictable and can change very quickly. Roscoff is a commune in Brittany on the northwest coast of France, with ferry links across the Channel to the UK and Ireland.
Summer, from June till July, is warm and quite sunny but rarely very hot. The average high temperature increases to 18°C in June, peaks just above that at 20°C in July and August, then reduces slightly to 19°C in September. At night the temperature hovers just above 10°C, sometimes getting into the mid teens, but generally it gets quite cool after the sun goes down. It can get pleasantly hot in the day time and never becomes uncomfortable. Sunshine levels are quite good with an average of seven hours per day for most of the season. This is the driest time of year in Roscoff but showers still fall quite frequently and sometimes the clouds loiter about for longer than you might like. The sea peaks at 17°C from July to September, which some might find a little cool. Generally though, the weather is very pleasant in summer with only the odd, excusable, shower or grey day. As might be expected, July and August usually have the best of the summerâs weather.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Autumn, in October and November, starts off mild but soon becomes cool. The average high temperature drops to 16°C in October and 12°C in November, and the average low temperature drops to 10°C and 7°C respectively. Youâll need a coat handy from mid October. Sunshine levels reduce quickly to an average of four hours per day in October and three in November. The sea becomes too cool for swimmng and rainfall increases. Frequent and sometimes heavy showers can be expected, especially towards the end of the season.
Winter, from December till February, is cool and wet. Winter weather is no delight here in Roscoff due to its position in the face of wet Atlantic winds. The average high temperature drops to around 9°C and the average low to 4°C for most of the season. It can get down to freezing but subzero temperatures are very rare and frosts donât usually develop around the coast. Snowfall is unlikely. Precipitation usually falls as rain and does so seemingly all the time. Sunshine levels are pretty dismal as clouds tend to dominate the sky. December and January average just two hours of sunshine per day.
Spring, from March till May, gradually sees the weather improving in all areas. The average high temperature climbs above 10°C at the start of the season and gets into the mid teens by May. Night times remain cold. Rainfall reduces, though still falls in light showers quite frequently. Sunshine levels increase slowly then jump up to an average of six hours per day in May.
