Situated within the state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula, Riviera Maya makes up a section of the eastern coast of Mexico in Central America. This resort enjoys a tropical climate with high temperatures, plenty of sunshine and a fair amount of rainfall throughout the year.

The average temperature ranges between 26°C and 27°C, rarely dropping below 20°C, even during the winter months. The rainy season falls between June and October when the resort can experience as many as 15 rainy days per month followed by the dry season from November to May.

Riviera Maya, Mexico is found on flat terrain, covered by low tropical jungle in the centre, giving way to a white sandy coastline around the edge. The resort is peppered with a number of natural cenotes, or underwater caves, which are popular locations for swimming, snorkelling and diving.

Central Akumal Beach

The Jungle Place

The Jungle Place in Playa del Carmen is a must-visit for animal-lovers or anyone travelling with children, whatever the weather. This popular attraction is an animal sanctuary which houses a colony of endangered spider monkeys.

You can choose to wander the grounds on your own or if you make a previous reservation, you'll be able to join a tour of the centre and have the chance to get up close and personal with some of the monkeys. Each tour lasts for around one hour and is an incredible experience for anyone who wants to learn more about the species and how to prevent their extinction.

Due to the fairly low rainfall, January is a great time to play a round of golf and fans of the sport will be pleased to hear that there is a number of championship courses to be found in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

Held at the beginning of January each year, the BPM Festival is an internationally-renowned electronic music festival held in Playa del Carmen.
