What's the Weather like in Rethymnon in December

Temperature

As the end of the year approaches, Rethymnon experiences the coldest weather to date. Historically the lowest temperature ever recorded was registered in December 1985, but at only 0°C, it proves how mild the climate is in this part of Northern Crete can be.

Average temperatures for December in Rethymnon are usually around 12°C, which means it is very unlikely to be a White Christmas here. And with average highs reaching up to 14°C, there is every chance that it could be nice and warm.

The highest ever temperature recorded in Rethymnon in December was a very balmy 29°C in 2005. So, who knows, you could be having Christmas dinner on the beach.

Sea Temperature

The sea water is definitely still warm enough in December to match a summer's day. Average sea temperatures of 18°C mean a refreshing Boxing Day dip is well within the realms of possibility.

Precipitation

However December is also the wettest month of the year in Rethymnon and approximately half of the 31 days in December will experience some form of precipitation. But with only 62mm expected to fall throughout the entire month, there are plenty of dry times too.

Humidity

The increase in precipitation can lead to a raise in humidity levels which can reach up to 77% throughout Rethymnon. But with the light coastal breeze, the air remains clear, and comfort levels are always high.

Average lows of 9°C mean that local residents will feel a distinct chill in the air during the month, especially at night. But for those travelling from the UK or Northern parts of Europe, this type of weather in December can feel positively tropical.

Sunshine

Even though December provides some of the shortest days of the year, there is still an average of 6 hours sunshine every day. This ensures Rethymnon is the perfect place to go for a short winter break or to escape the cold altogether for a much longer period.
