What's the Weather in Rethymnon in August
As the summer continues into August in Rethymnon, the weather is everything you would expect it to be. Plenty of long, hot summer days are followed by delicious Mediterranean nights that offer the perfect setting for any visit to the region.
Temperature
Though July is considered the hottest month of the year in Rethymnon, average temperatures remain at 26°C throughout August.
In the daytime expect average high temperatures of up to 30°C, especially during the peak hours surrounding the midday sun. And with record highs of 42°C recorded in the region in August 2002, care must always be taken, especially when the weather is at its warmest.
Sunshine
With such beautiful conditions, in days that enjoy an average of 13 hours of daily sunshine, it is no wonder this area of Northern Crete is so popular. Visitors arrive in their droves, and every beach and eatery is going to be packed full of fun-seeking guests.
Rainfall
Rain is something that is not usually considered in Rethymnon during the summer season. In August, there is a chance of experiencing up to 8mm of rain throughout the entire month. But it is more than likely that you won't see any precipitation at all. And if you do find your meal is ruined by rain in one of the fine restaurants in the region, the staff are more than likely to simply replace your meal and let you get on with enjoying your stay.

Casa Vitae Hotel
For those that prefer their accommodation more cosy, the Casa Vitae Hotel can always accommodate. Thanks to its reputation for outstanding service and a very welcoming atmosphere, early booking is essential. But if you are lucky enough to be able to occupy one of the well maintained rooms or suites, you will be glad you did. Set in the heart of the old town, nothing is ever too far away. It's just an effort to leave the hotel, especially when it is as good as this.
Hit the Beach
The sea temperature is also at its highest during August, reaching a very pleasurable 26°C. This ensures even the most cold averse beach goer is going to want to take a dip.
Geropotamos Beach
Thanks to its stony floor, Geropotamos Beach is never as busy as the main beaches in Rethymnon, making it the perfect destination for those that like their sun bathing a little more peaceful. Even in the height of August you should always be able to find a spot. And with the clear blue sea only meters away, you may want to stay forever. Umbrellas are available for rent from the beach itself, and a small bar offers a range of tantalising refreshments. Exposure to the north wind means the water can be a little choppy, but it does at least bring some relief from that hot August sun.
Platanias Beach
Platanias Beach is another destination which can benefit from the cool northerly winds. But with a stretching sandy beach and far more organisation, this location does get busy. Several tavernas and bars offer an array of refreshments, while sunbeds and parasols are available as long as you get there before the crowds. Take the local bus from Rethymnon town to travel the 4km to the beach or take your own transport. It's a great place to meet new friends on your trip and enjoy the summer sun as it should be.
Bars and Restaurants
Entasis Cocktail Bar
When you want the best Mojito in Rethymnon, many would argue that Entasis Cocktail Bar is the only place to go. With a lively atmosphere, great music and fabulous company, the place is always popular. The beer is cold, the cocktails are fresh and the prices are fair. The mixologists behind the bar know exactly how to entertain, but for many, the views over the shimmering blue sea are all they want. However you choose to drink your cocktail, make sure it comes from Entasis.
Castelvecchio
Castelvecchio offers traditional Greek grilled food that will show you just why so many residents look so very well fed. This family run restaurant is the epitome of good taste, offering well flavoured meals for its many visitors. A wealth of local wines accompany the exceptionally broad and innovative dishes. And, as always, the cakes are on the house. Just make sure you bring your wallet when you come to this sensational restaurant as credit cards are not accepted. It is also wise to book ahead. Castelvecchio only opens in the evenings and everyone wants to get a seat.

That way you can enjoy a very authentic Greek experience without having to worry just how much of Thavma's hospitality you have managed to drink.
