Quinta do Lago is situated in Algarve, the southernmost region of mainland Portugal. Algarve is located on the Atlantic coast and is Portugalâs most popular tourist region because of the long, hot summers. The very low amount of summer rainfall in the region means that Quinta do Lago receives around 300 sunny days every year with as much as 12 hours of sunshine per day at the height of summer. The excellent weather makes the resorts in Quinta do Lago a very popular destination for golfers, as well as those who enjoy scuba diving and other aquatic sports.
Quinta do Lago is located to the west of mainland Spain and shares much the same climate. Being on the Atlantic seaboard, Algarveâs weather is cooler and more moderate than its neighbour.
Summer in Quinta do Lago is long and hot with average temperatures in July and August reaching 28°C during the day, and rarely falling below 18°C at night. The warm weather in Quinta do Lago extends from April all the way through to October mainly due to the relatively high ocean temperatures along that part of the coast. In the summer months the water temperature remains around the 20°C mark from June until October, making the coast of Algarve a popular beach destination for all of Europe. With 12 hours of sunshine per day in June and July, and only a minimal amount of rain, Quinta do Lago is a great place to take a break in the sun.
Autumn in Quinta do Lago is still very warm with average temperatures remaining above 20°C well into November. Autumn sea temperatures in Algarve remain very warm almost until December, making it comfortable for swimming until almost the beginning of winter. During the autumn months the rainfall does go up, which can make it humid, with the average in November reaching 73%. Quinta do Lagos is far enough north so that the hours of sunshine drop off around six hours per day in the autumn months, but the warm evenings mean that it is still comfortable enough to enjoy the vibrant nightlife of the area.
Winter in Quinta do Lago is still quite warm in comparison to many places in Europe, meaning that there really is no off-season in Algarve. With average temperatures around 16°C throughout the winter months, with rainfall of around 70mm per month until the end of February, the winters are mild but a little wet and humid. While winter weather in Quinta do Lago isnât necessarily suited to the beach, it is still great for taking advantage of the many golf courses in the area, and most resorts have heated pools so swimming and even sunbathing isnât totally out of the question.
Spring quickly warms up again in Quinta do Lago with average temperatures going back up to 20°C again by April. At the same time, the winter rains end and the weather returns to the warm, dry sunny days that the region is famous for. The sea temperature begins to rise again in spring so that by May it averages a comfortable 17°C, making swimming a popular pastime once again. The daily amount of sunshine goes back up to around 10 hours per day in May.
Weather Hazards
Because the Algarve region of Portugal is exposed to the Atlantic it is vulnerable to powerful storms that sweep up from the south. It is also susceptible to heat waves as Portugal is one of the hottest regions in Europe. Generally, the extremes of weather and events like wild fires tend to happen in the more remote regions to the north of Portugal.
