June in Puerto Plata is considerably warmer and drier than the previous month and it also marks the beginning of hurricane season. Hurricane season runs June 1-November 30 with tropical storms and hurricanes affecting the island on an almost yearly basis. In fact, it is not uncommon for tropical storms to develop in the vicinity of the island during this time of the year. While this is not cause to cancel a trip, do be sure to check the extended forecast before heading out.

One reason for hurricane season beginning when it does is that water temperatures have finally reached 80°F on a consistent basis. This warm water serves as fuel for hurricanes around the island, the average water temperature for the month is 28°C (82°F) which is plenty hot enough to sustain tropical storm formation.

Also during this time of year, the amount of daily sunlight begins to increase as the northern hemisphere inches toward the longest day of the year.  In this month, the region will see an average of 8 hours of sunshine per day with only a 10 percent chance of a cloudy day and a 22 percent chance of rain. After seeing several months of high rainfall totals, this month begins to usher in a slightly drier season with only 88mm of rain received over an average of 13 days.  

On land, temperatures are definitely on the warm side and it is a good idea to pack plenty of clothes that are lightweight and breathable in order to be able to beat the heat. During the month, the average afternoon high tops out at 32°C (90°F). Combined with humidity levels around 80 percent it can be very sticky, especially in the tropical rain forests of the island. Average overnight lows will dip to 20°C (68°F) and throughout the day the average daily temperature will hover at a high 26°C (79°F).

For the ultimate in room selection, Blue Jack Tar is the choice. June guests can choose between rooms in the hotel or larger apartment-style condos. In the hotel, there are 69 deluxe rooms along with six junior suites all with air conditioning, balcony or private terrace, garden or golf course view, and all other amenities. Meanwhile, the recently completed condos are completely surrounded by the Robert Trent Jones golf course and are perfect for families and those who plan on hitting the links.

For those looking to completely unplug and get away from it all, a different choice is Jasmine Spa and Wellness. This holistic health retreat located in the mountains will nourish guests' spiritual, physical and emotional health. Cell phones are not allowed and there are no televisions or other devices allowed, however, it is the ideal place to reconnect with one's self and get away for one, two or three weeks.

For visitors who are on a budget, one of the best hotels in Puerto Plata is The Secret Garden. With a very accommodating staff and full breakfast, guests are treated just as they are at some of the bigger resorts. Guests can't go wrong with still being close to the action and activities while saving some money at the same time.

Playa Dorada is one of the best-known beaches near Puerto Plata and is the location of some of the best hotels and resorts. With beautiful sand and crystal clear waters, this beach makes for the perfect spot to catch some rays and enjoy the views. Numerous restaurants and bars are nearby to make it easy to take a break from the sun and enjoy some native food and drink. Water temperatures in June are 28°C (82°F) making the month the perfect time to hit the beach.

For great food at a good price, Kilometro Zero is a good choice. This laid back restaurant features large portions with a very extensive menu including authentic Italian food and perfectly grilled steaks. It is closed on Wednesdays, but is packed the rest of the week.

For a great breakfast in the region, try Margo's Beach Bar. Guests can enjoy their eggs while sitting near the beach and taking in the view. The restaurant also features a big business the rest of the day as well with good sandwiches as well as cold drinks.

For some, nightlife after a day spent in the sun Onno's Bar is a great choice. Featuring a DJ on Friday and Saturday nights, the party will last until 3:00am. There is Mexican Wednesday as well as Ladies' Night and plenty of other specials in this happening island club. 

While in Puerto Plata in June, visitors should take advantage of some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving on the planet and enjoy what the undersea world has to offer. In June, the weather has begun to dry out allowing visitors plenty to time to enjoy the sun and the great outdoors. Companies such as Northern Coast Aquasports will be happy to arrange a trip to some of the great coral reefs surrounding the island. Trips include both open water dives as well as one cavern dive for the more adventurous.

For a change of pace, head inland a little ways and explore one of the longest rivers in the Caribbean with a rafting adventure. Rancho Baiguate offers guests an once-in-a-lifetime experience as they take on rapids and explore canyons for a great adrenaline rush. Guests should bring a swimsuit, water shoes, a towel and an extra set of dry clothes.
