Playa La Colonia

If the beaches of Duquesa Castillo simply aren't enough for you, you can always go for some long walks down south until you reach Playa La Colonia, which starts from the Penuela Brook all the way to the Maicandil Brook.

It's a beautiful stretch of fine sand, most of it in shades of white and cream, bordered by light blue waters glistening in the bright sunshine. It's part of an area once trampled by both Christian and Moorish soldiers in multiple attacks of the coast.

But over the 17th and 18th century, the beach thrived from the development of fishing and wine trading. This lovely beach often gets the Blue Flag for its high levels of cleanliness and safety, and it's absolutely perfect for the hotter days of May, when the shallow water entrance allows for quick swimming sessions and splashing around.

We all know that a good reason to visit Puerto de la Duquesa is to get the chance to play on some of the best golf courses in Europe and it's a well-known fact that Manilva has quite a few of those.

In fact, one of the top spots drawing thousands of golf aficionados throughout the year is the Almenara Golf Club, a superb 18-hole structure designed over several acres of carefully manicured greens and lush backdrops overlooking spectacular lakes and countryside.

It holds the Almenara School of Excellence, where many established golf champions started their careers, and where you can also have access to their video studio, which analyses swings with the purpose of improving the hit ratio.

The club also boasts high end practice facilities, and the mixed terrain offers multiple conditions for various skill levels, from absolute beginners to senior golfers. The course also features buggies, club and cart hire facilities, as well as a bar, a restaurant with a terrace and a pro shop.

Landmarks and Historical Attractions

Manilva was once a Roman and later on a Moorish settlement, but the current form of the old town centre dates back from the 16th century.

There are plenty of landmarks and historical attractions to peruse while taking the walking tours of this charming area, including the watch tower commissioned by King Charles, who wanted to provide some form of warning when pirates would attack the southern coastal areas of Spain.

Its mainly Spanish character remains to this day, and some of its most interesting spots are the Church of Santa Ana, as well as the numerous alleyways flanked by boutiques and restaurants, and the countless acres of vineyards boasting aromatic Moscatel grapes which are layered around Manilva's main town.

It's an absolute beauty and a pleasure to peruse when out on long walks. You can even take some of the hiking tours to the neighbouring mountains, if you've had enough of the beaches and you'd like some of the fresh forest air.
