Bars and Restaurants
El Padrino is a large restaurant in the La Ranilla District serving huge portions of meat and fish dishes with an interesting Scandinavian influence. The menu offers dishes such as pork steak with a blueberry sauce or fish fillets in lobster sauce. The portions are generous and good value for money. The restaurant has chairs and tables outside allowing views of the La Ranilla District. You will find them at Calle Lomo17.
El Mana is a wonderful restaurant for vegetarians serving a variety of food such as goats cheese nests with honey and thyme or homemade pasta with roasted pumpkin and leek sauce. Vegetarians will be in heaven with all the choices and all of them are lovingly put together and delicious. The decor is modern and quirky. The wine on the wine list is all from local vineyards. The menu changes with the seasons and uses mainly organic produce. The restaurant is located at Calle Mequinez 21.
Things to do in Puerto de la Cruz in April
Pueblo Chico is a short drive away from Puerto de la Cruz. This is a very detailed and beautifully made mini version of Tenerife. You will find historical buildings, volcanic mountains, people on the black sand beaches and homes representing the different parts of the island. Entrance is expensive at 12 Euros per adult but the replicas are very well made and you could happily spend a few hours here. Small children will love exploring every detail of the park. If you are in need of adventure you can zip line over the mini island.
Jardin Botanico the botanic gardens are the perfect place to walk among the flowers that are in bloom in April. During the Colonial area explorers brought a number of plants back from remote countries to Spain, they needed an appropriate climate to grow the plants and so the Botanic Gardens in Puerto de la Cruz where created. The first trees were planted in 1792 and today many of these have reached considerable size. The gardens are very well run and provide a tranquil and interesting break away from the beaches and pools. Currently the garden covers 20,000 square meters but plans are underway to triple its size.
The Orotava Valley is filled with quaint villages, restuarnts and vineyards. You can explore the valley on a self-guided car trip or by bus with a local guide. A very popular activity in the valley is hiking and there are a number of well marked walking trails. A guide can take you for a walk to on the Ruta del Agua, Los Organos or La Caldera routes. All the hikes offer views of the valley, sea and the volcanic Mt.Teide. The La Caldera route is very popular as it ends at a well stocked bar with spectacular views across the valley.
Plaza Charco is the old centre of Puerto de la Cruz. The square is filled with outdoor restaurants and local musical performances. During the day you will find shops catering to tourists on the pavement and in the small alleys off the square. In the evening the square fills with locals, who come here to relax, have dinner and dance. This is a place to experience the authentic culture of the Canary Islands.
