The full range of restaurants and bars in Protaras is yet to open, and still a good few months away, however there are still a few fantastic eateries around, many of which are traditional tavernas to try some authentic Greek-Cypriot dishes. Alternatively, the Mojito Bar & Grill is a popular spot for modern day food with fantastic cocktails to help your evening go with a bang, as well as being great value for money too. Many visitors who try this place, do tend to go back, which is a sign of quality.
Many of the larger hotels open during the winter months have several restaurants on site, however do try Kyklos Greek Restaurant for something a little more authentic, with varied meze platters to make your mouth water. Try the fried calamari for fresh seafood at its best too, giving you a taste of real Cyprus.
There's no denying that January in Protaras is quiet, but pleasantly warm temperatures and less crowds means you can enjoy the resort and its raw beauty in relative peace and quiet.
Things to do in Protaras in January
Cooler weather means you can travel further without too much discomfort, so jump on the regular and reliable bus service to nearby Paralimni to explore the picturesque town with its gardens, churches, and many traditional restaurants. Agios Georgios Church is a beautiful spot, with amazing architecture. The cooler weather means you can truly take in this serene and beautiful church, without the flocking summer crowds.
Of course, January means a fresh new year, and the first day of the first month is a big deal in Cyprus. Known as St Basil's Day, you will see many traditions first hand on the island, and in Protaras itself. Try vasilopita as it is offered to you, a traditional New Year cake which contains a coin if you find it then you should have good luck for the following year!
