Weather Lowdown

While September marks the end of summer, climatic conditions at Praia de Rocha tend to be mild and welcoming for the intrepid trekker from more temperate climes. The mean temperature for September is recorded at 22°C but sight-seers, pleasure pilgrims and holiday makers can also expect relatively high daytime temperatures and a few scorching days. Flip flops, shorts and tee-shirts remain appropriate attire given the highest average temperatures are documented at 26°C. Lowest average temperatures for September are a cosy and comfortable 18°C.

For those arriving a little after the busy summer months, there are still 10 sunshine hours on average in which to take in all the sights, sounds, olfactory and culinary delights southern Portugal has to offer. Similar to the summer season the chance of experiencing clear sunny conditions is at a fifty percent chance. The chance of showers dampening anyone's holiday plans remain low as, on average, there are just four rain days throughout the month of September. Mean monthly precipitation is recorded at just 9mm, or just less than a centimetre. Generally speaking there is just over a ten percent chance of rain on any given day over the month, and just a five percent chance of a cloudy overcast day.

The average sea temperature for the coastal Atlantic waters is recorded at a reasonable 21°C. September therefore offers great summer weather, but is mild enough for those who don't want to be under the strongest sunshine, or prefer to take their holidays when the season begins to slow down slightly. Those visitors who wait until October or later, will see rainfall increase, sea temperatures drop, and air temperatures (particularly at night-time) fall below 20°C.

Where to Stay

The Hotel Algarve Casino is almost a destination in its own right. This huge complex, houses a substantial amount of accommodation options, restaurants, stages and the famous Casino itself. It's one of the oldest Praia da Rocha hotels, located directly by the beach, and rates as a five-star, so expect excellent service, great rooms, and all the frills. There are entertainment options for kids as well as spa treatments, gym facilities and even a Turkish bath for the adults. It has its own restaurants serving local and international dishes and the option to dine poolside.

A cheaper option that provides comfortable, self-catering options, in a good location and with basic amenities, are the Apartmentos Castelo da Rocha. They are a no frills option, but the close proximity to the beach, and the access to a children's and adults swimming pool, satisfy guests who don't want a huge amount from their accommodation, but mainly want to enjoy the location. The 2-bedroom duplex apartments are extremely spacious.

If location is not an issue, and price is, the Hotel Made Inn, located in downtown Portimão, is an excellent budget option. The unique themed rooms are worth the novelty factor, and the rood terrace gives views of the town. It is a 2.7km journey to the Praia da Rocha beach, but for visitors who want something a little different, and prefer to be in the authentic town of Portimão and get great value, it is a great option.

Things to Do

For the kids (of all ages) there is a wide variety of activities but favourites include visits beyond Portimão. Further afield is the wonderful Parque Zoológico de Lagos just over 30km away, which hosts a vast array of exotic animals, sure to amuse and educate, and open all year round. En route to Lagos, is the epic Slide and Splash water park, which is the largest water parks in Portugal, and one of the largest in Europe. It closes from November until March.

Nature-lovers will love the experience of seeing the National Park of Monchique from horse-back, or simply improving their riding skills under the expertise of instructors at the beautiful Vale Ferro property which is located 14km away from Rocha. They offer lessons for all levels and ages, and will organise interesting and challenging rides for those who want more of an adventure.

Hit the Beach

Beach-side activities begin to slow down at this point in the year, but there are still plenty of options. Beyond Praia da Rocha beach, another neighbouring bay is Praia dos Careanos, which can be reached by walking along the cliff-top, beyond Praia do Vau. The path is easily followed as it is marked by wooden barriers. The beach has sun-beds and lifeguards during the high season.

For a change of scenery, pop into Ferragudo, for a kayak trip with Algarve Freedom Kayaks. They take on all levels and ages, and with a marine biologist as your guide, all ages are sure to find this a thrilling and educational excursion. There is an opportunity to visit a beach only accessible by sea, or to join one of their BBQ trips.

Restaurants and Nightlife

If value for money is the order of the day, alongside standard fare that may keep the kids happy, Claire's Restaurant will offer just that. It's a lively place, full of tourists, ex-pats and the odd local, with fun, entertaining staff. It stays open until midnight so it also is good for a late-night feed.

Located just back a little from the Avenue Tomás Cabreira, Cletonina is the popular and reliable place serves good quality Italian and Portuguese meals, and excellent ice-cream. It's family friendly and good value. They also serve drinks which can be enjoyed on their terrace or while enjoying the upstairs views.

Another great Italian option is Bullie and Pupi, just above Praia dos Castelos, this restaurant is busy but with speedy service and friendly staff. They serve standard Italian dishes, great pizza and a variety of pastas. The restaurant boats excellent views over the beach, and is a great place to enjoy some wine also, particularly on the terrace outside.
