Weather Lowdown

The autumnal mild weather continues into November, with a drop in temperatures and an increase in rainfall, but temperate weather that still can be enjoyed by visitors. The month of November is the wettest month of the year in Praia de Rocha and marks the start of cooler wintertime temperatures in Portugal.

Mean monthly precipitation is recorded at 85mm. Over the course of the month, holiday makers and travellers might be expected to experience around 9 days where rain occurs with a sixteen percent chance of experiencing an overcast, grey day. These cooler conditions, in comparison to summer, do not preclude the potential for holiday enjoyment particularly as the area still offers milder conditions not experienced at this time of year in many parts of the European continent.

Mean monthly temperatures are recorded at 16°C. Highest temperatures for the month of November average at around 19°C while conversely at the colder scale, the average is recorded at 13°C so you may need a jacket. Sunshine hours extend, on average, for 8 hours per day affording ample time to dedicate oneself to the overabundance of activities available at Praia de Rocha. Average sea temperatures for the coastal Atlantic Ocean waters are recorded at 19°C, a little warmer than average ambient air temperatures, but it isn't prime time to be swimming anymore.

Where to Stay

Take advantage of the quiet winter months, and the slightly wetter weather, by booking into a resort that is at the high end of the market, and meets the needs of its guests before they even step foot outside their accommodation. The Pestana Alvor Praia Beach & Golf Hotel does just that, with direct access to the beach, sauna and spa treatments, a Turkish bath, bars, restaurants and of course, access to the golfing facilities. This is a much less crowded area, away from the hub of Praia da Rocha, situated in Alvor, but accessible to the amenities when desired.  There are some excellent deals on their website out of season.

A self-catering option that is located just a five-minute walk from the beach is the Mesa e Case Encantada. It offers free Wi-Fi and parking on site. The apartment has one-bedroom, with an extra bed, a fully equipped kitchen and modern decor. It offers greater privacy and independence than other apartment options. It doesn't have a website but can be booked through a number of booking websites.

Clube Praia Mar offers basic apartments at a good price which have plenty of space and are in a good location. It's a good option for those who want to dine out and enjoy the restaurants in the area. It offers one and two-bedroom apartments, as well as studios, some with balconies and some with sea views. This is a 3-star hotel, which doesn't offer many frills, but does offer great value and location.

Things to Do

An adventure that can be had in any season, Algarve Jeep Safari tours can be self-driven or taken with a tour-guide. The company operate out of Rocha, and offer the chance to learn 4x4 driving skills or be driven on off-road excursions in the inner Algarve.

Closer to home, a visit to Fortaleza de Santa Catarina in Portimão (St Catherine's Fortress), also known as Miraduoro, can be a really enjoyable excursion. It's difficult to miss the outline of the fortress from the beach at Praia da Rocha, looming as it does on the skyline. The fort is a medieval construction, built to protect the peninsula from pirates and military invasions, and offers a relaxed place to enjoy the vistas of the coastline as far as Ferragudo, particularly under moonlight. Sometimes there are performances taking place in the little café.

On one of the more frequent rainy days, take the opportunity to check out the cultural events of the area. Also in Portimão you will find the beautiful and comfortable Teatro Municipal de Portimão which offers a wide range of cultural events, including music, theatre, pantomime, and dance. Some of the performances are in English. The website is in Portuguese but check out an English-language listings page for up-to-date information of what's on.

Restaurants and Nightlife

Take a short trip into the centre of Portimão to experience the wonderful dining experience on offer at Marisqueira Coral. It's not a budget restaurant, but this restaurant is highly regarded among locals and visitors alike, and offers the best in Portuguese dishes and seafood. Ask Paolo for recommendations he knows best but the oysters are a hit. The restaurant is small, so book if you want to be sure of a table, especially on weekends.

The entrance is a little hidden from view, but when found, Restaurant F is a gem, with a modern twist on Portuguese food, excellent service, an extensive list of wines and beautiful terrace views over the ocean. Its prices are mid-range. During busy periods it is recommended to call ahead for a booking.

Taffy's bar offers typical Welsh food and beers, in a comfortable, friendly pub.  Favourites include the fried breakfasts, the steaks and the ribs, as well as the entertainment the place provides karaoke, live music or quiz nights.
