January Weather Averages

Sorted by popularity:

What's the weather like in Praia da Luz in January

Despite the fact January is the coldest month of the year to visit this part of Portugal, it certainly shouldn't stop you heading off and enjoying some of the wonderful scenery and outdoor activities around the Algarve. Simply wrapping up warm and heading off is the order of the month, and there are many scenic walking trails and activities to try, provided you remember a warmer jacket, particularly for evenings.

Whilst many resorts tend to close up for the off season, you will still find many activities and attractions around this part of the country, and many of them are set outdoors, which fits the mild winters you can expect here.

Temperature

Praia da Luz experiences an average temperature of 12°C during the first month of the year, which can reach a high of up to 15°C on particularly warmer days; again, a great excuse to get out and about, and despite the cooler temperatures, this is still mild compared to many other countries during this time of year. Evenings are chilly however, so do wrap up warm if you are heading out for an evening walk, with an average low reaching 9°C on the cooler nights.

Rainfall

With a typical Mediterranean climate comes most of the area's rain falling during the winter months, and there is no difference to that here, with 100mm of rain expected during the month, affecting around 14 days on average to some degree.

Sunshine Hours

That being said however, the sun certainly still shines, with around 6 hours of bright sunshine per day to enjoy on average.

If you're looking to enjoy swimming and water-sports however, you may be best waiting until the summer months arrive, or at least choose a hotel with an indoor pool and facilities, as the sea temperature is a chilly average of 14°C at this time.

Hotels in Praia da Luz in January

Hotel Belavista da Luz

The off season certainly doesn't mean a shortage of accommodation in the resort, and there are many options available for groups, couples, families, and singles in January. Hotel Belavista da Luz is a great choice for your winter stay in Portugal, with plenty of facilities to make your holiday run smoothly. There are two large bars on offer, two swimming pools, and a tennis court for those days you feel like getting active. Families will also enjoy the large children's playground.

Luz Beach Apartments

If you prefer a more home from home feel then check out Luz Beach Apartments, offering a comfortable base for your stay. Apartments are well stocked and spacious, with stunning views to boot. You will also have your own terrace and kitchenette for entertaining the family during the evenings. The apartments are also right on the public transport route, which makes getting around easy.

Montinho de Ouro

Alternatively, Montinho de Ouro is a peaceful option, right on the coast and enjoying beautiful views. There are plentiful facilities on-site and you can enjoy the top-class on-site restaurant if you don't feel like leaving the grounds of an evening.

Bars and Restaurants

Aquario

You won't struggle to find somewhere to head for your evening meal even during this quieter time of year, and there are many places which stay open regardless of the month. Aquario is a popular choice for those who enjoy steak dishes, with attractive and imaginative presentation. The restaurant looks upmarket, but has a laid-back feel. However, book ahead at weekends, as it does get busy.

The Dolphin Restaurante

For another steak lover's choice, try The Dolphin Restaurante. This is a traditional restaurant, decorated in whites and neutrals, and is renowned for its traditional dishes. Prices are very reasonable here, despite the feel of the place, and again, it's a popular place to head.

Chicca's

Chicca's is also known for its amazing food, fresh and well presented, with top class service. You will notice a café-like feel, which is great for a relaxing night out. Be sure to check out the desserts, as they are famously delicious!

Things to do in Praia da Luz in January

Querena Sausage Fair

One of the most popular events that takes place in Praia da Luz in January is the Querena Sausage Fair, with various processions, live music concerts and loads of fantastic grilled sausages on offer. This fair is perfect for the whole family and is a great place to enjoy quality food at low prices, as well as a spot of tradition and culture for good measure.

Tennis

If you want to burn off some of that food, check out Jonathan Markson Algarve Tennis Centre, for a spot of sporting action. You don't have to be a pro to play, and if you have no idea, you can take lessons from the instructors on site. This is a great way to get active during those mild winter days, whilst possibly learning a new skill at the same time. The Algarve is well known for its outdoor activities, and this is just one of them.

Burgau

We can't avoid the fact that this is winter however, so if the weather does take a turn for the worst during your stay, head to one of the nearby villages in search of some sunshine. Burgau is the best place to go to relax and take it easy whilst enjoying a leisurely coastal walk.

Lagos

Failing that, how about a spot of shopping in the town of Lagos? Whilst you won't find major shopping malls in the main, you will find many boutique-style shops to explore and pick up some souvenirs to take home, such as purses, pottery, and port wine. There is one large mall if you do want to do some large scale credit card-bashing, and that is the open-air Algarve Shopping, which is located between Lagos and the popular resort of Albufeira.
