October is the start of the autumn season in Ponta Delgada, offering plenty of warm days and cooler nights. But as the month progresses, the level of rainfall can increase significantly.
As part of the hurricane season, Ponta Delgada in October is highly unlikely to be hit by its own hurricane. But the weather is still affected by the events that occur nearby.
This means that, as the month progresses, Ponta Delgada is likely to become wetter and wetter, until it reaches November, the second wettest month in the entire year.
Across the month of October up to 16 days are likely to experience some form of rainfall. And while some showers can be quite light, there are some significant down pours. In total, 114mm of rain are likely to fall in October, signifying the end of the dry season of the peak summer months.
While average high temperatures can still reach up to 21°C throughout October, the air definitely becomes cooler in the evenings and at night. In October average lows will fall to 15°C. And while this is still much warmer than the weather back home, for a sub-tropical climate, this is an indication that winter is on its way.
There are still plenty of good days to be had at this time of the year. Though cloud cover does become thicker in October, there are still forecasted to be an average of 7 hours of daily sunshine across the region. This ensures some very good patches of bright sunny weather in between rain and clouds.
In a time of such change, it is wise to check the weather forecast before planning any day out, especially if you are visiting one of the peaks on the island. That way you can ensure visibility will be good and the clouds will not spoil the view.
