November marks the last month of autumn in Ponta Delgada. But while there is still plenty of sunshine, the weather is definitely cooler, and a lot wetter than the previous months.
Average temperatures fall to 16°C, which is still very mild for this time of the year. Daily highs reach an average of 18°C offering plenty of warmth, especially when compared to the weather in the UK.
Historically temperatures have reached up to 27°C with 1994 offering the warmest November on record. However Ponta Delgada is at risk of hurricanes at this time of the year. And though the chances of actually experiencing a hurricane on the island are very slim, the adverse conditions suffered because of those nearby can cause drastic changes in the climate across the island.
Statistically, November is the second wettest month in the year in Ponta Delgada, falling only behind January in levels of average rainfall. Typically the region will receive 133mm of rain throughout the 30 days, spread across approximately 17 of them.
When the rain isn't falling, expect periods of light, bright weather. November usually offers 6 hours of daily sunshine in Ponta Delgada. While the chances of a cloudy day are just 14%.
There is a much greater chance of wind during the cooler months of the year. In November, there is a 38% chance of a windy day. But when combined with average sea temperatures of 20°C, the increase in tidal activity makes for some great surfing conditions.
As with all sub-tropical climates, Ponta Delgada at the end of autumn is a time for disparity. There are many days when rain will be an issue. But even during this time, the climate is very mild. But when the sun comes out, it is a beautiful place to be, offering plenty of good weather for everyone.
Where to Stay
The Residencial Sete Cidades may be a basic hotel, but for the location you can't get any better. The rooms are clean and airy, the staff are very friendly and the breakfast served is incredibly tempting. And when you walk out of the door, everything you would want is right there in front of you. The main town, bars, restaurants and the sea front are all a short walk away. And if you want to hire a car to see more the island, the Residencial Sete Cidades even offers free parking. Though it is set right in the centre, the hotel offers excellent value for money. And for anyone wanting to stay in November, there are some great deals to be had.
Situated in downtown Ponta Delgada, Lapsa House is a great place to stay all year round. The high ceilings and large windows ensure every room captures the most light possible. And in the off peak season, the entire apartment can be rented, offering the ideal location for large families or small groups. As the house is situated close to the town centre, there is some road noise. However, the charm of the accommodation and its convenient situation will always make up for any noise. The wonderful owners will even supply fresh bread as part of breakfast to ensure everyone enjoys their stay.
For great value for money, book the Thomas Hostel. Like many of the hostels in the Azores, this hostel provides a much higher standard than you would normally expect from this type of accommodation. But the prices are still unbelievably good. The rooms are clean, airy and very well maintained. It is close to the university, where there is plenty going on; and within walking distance of the town centre. This is a hostel, rather than a hotel, so breakfast is basic. But for high quality rooms, a great location and fantastic price, you really can't go wrong.
Restaurants and Nightlife
Though O Corisco is a little harder to find than the usual restaurant in Ponta Delgada, it is well worth searching out. Excellent food, incredible value and very friendly staff ensure that everyone who comes here wants to come again. Tucked away on a little side street in the centre of town, the food on offer is a combination of Portuguese and International fare. And there is plenty for everyone. Portions are large and the atmosphere is relaxing, while the extensive range of meal options means you are always spoilt for choice. Besides, if you come back again, you get 10% discount on your next bill. It's yet another reason to spend lots of mealtimes at O Corisco.
At Mercado do Peixe expect a range of high quality, fresh fish dishes at very affordable prices. While many Azorean restaurants will charge a premium for fish, especially if you have a view of the sea, Mercado do Peixe is very reasonable. Located directly in front of the ocean, this old restaurant may not have the best service, but the quality of the dishes more than makes up for it. Every meal is cooked to order, so you may have a little wait. But with the sangria flowing and the atmosphere very relaxed, you can while away a few hours at Mercado do Peixe and still want to come back for more.
Lan's Pizzaria, Exotic Food & Vegetariano is just the place to come for lunch or dinner when you want a good drink and a tasty pizza. But if you really want a treat opt for the dish of the day and get a taste of Ponta Delgada at its best. Using a combination of Vegetarian and Asian influences, Lan will use the best ingredients of the day to cook up her signature dish. You will never know what it is until it's ready. But when it is, you can depend on it to be deeply delicious. To finish off your meal, opt for a handmade desert which will have your taste buds soaring. There's no reservations or formal eating. You just find a seat and enjoy something truly sensational.
Things to Do
On a clear day in November, the view from Pico Carvao is something you don't want to miss. The increased rainfall at this time of the year makes the landscape particularly luscious, providing a wonderful outlook across Lagoa das Sete Cidades. There are no amenities on site, so make sure you take drinks and snacks with you. But see if you can spot which of the lakes reflects green and which reflects blue, when there is enough sun, the contrast is spectacular. You don't have to be a hiker to enjoy the walk, but there are some more challenging routes for those who want to test their skills. For the rest of us, it is the opportunity to take some incredible photographs and enjoy a truly invigorating side to Sao Miguel.
