January is the wettest month of the year in Ponta Delgada, which means there are more rainy weather during this month than at any other time of the year. However, with 19 days expecting precipitation, there are still plenty of dry days too. And with just over 7mm of rain expected to fall on each of the rainy days, the weather never stays wet for too long.
Even when it is raining, the climate in Ponta Delgada is still very mild. Average temperatures of 14°C are warmer than the following month of February, and are a significant improvement on the conditions for many back at home.
Indeed in 1989, temperatures reached a record 20°C in January in this part of the world. And though average highs of 16°C are for more likely for this time of the year, it does prove that there are still plenty of fine weather days to be had.
If you do fancy a dip, average sea temperatures will be at their coolest in January at just 17°C, and are likely to remain at this level well into May. However for those that enjoy snorkelling, windsurfing or sailing, these type of sea conditions will do nothing to deter your enthusiasm.
For those looking for a mild winter, the average minimum temperatures of 11°C in Ponta Delgada will always suffice. This ensures the chances of a frost in this part of the world are practically nil. And with the mountainous area through the centre of the island offering a great deal of protection from the northerly winds, the climate in this part of the Azores is very pleasant.
An average of 5 daily sunshine hours throughout the month offer plenty of light for those that want a break from the dull, grey days back home. This ensures the perfect opportunity for a fantastic winter getaway.

You have to have a sense of humour to eat at Cais 20. But if you can get over the quirky nature of the staff, you can have a really good meal. Unlike most restaurants in Ponta Delgada, fish is the speciality of the house, with the swordfish and fresh lobster particular favourites. But get ready for some reading, the menu is absolutely huge, and perfectly suits the portion sizes that are served. To ensure everything is cooked fresh, some of the meat dishes will be prepared right in front of you on a giant steak stone. For a unique eating experience, Cais 20 can't be missed.
If beef is more to your liking, then take a visit to Asociacion Agricola de Santana. As with many Portuguese restaurants, the focus in this restaurant is on high value, full flavoured meat that is cooked to perfection. And as this restaurant is part of the local meat producers co-operative, you know you are getting the best. For large parties or more intimate groups, taste the meat at Asociacion Agricola de Santana and you may not want to eat anywhere else again.
