January is the wettest month of the year in Ponta Delgada, which means there are more rainy weather during this month than at any other time of the year. However, with 19 days expecting precipitation, there are still plenty of dry days too. And with just over 7mm of rain expected to fall on each of the rainy days, the weather never stays wet for too long.

Even when it is raining, the climate in Ponta Delgada is still very mild. Average temperatures of 14°C are warmer than the following month of February, and are a significant improvement on the conditions for many back at home.

Indeed in 1989, temperatures reached a record 20°C in January in this part of the world. And though average highs of 16°C are for more likely for this time of the year, it does prove that there are still plenty of fine weather days to be had.

If you do fancy a dip, average sea temperatures will be at their coolest in January at just 17°C, and are likely to remain at this level well into May. However for those that enjoy snorkelling, windsurfing or sailing, these type of sea conditions will do nothing to deter your enthusiasm.

For those looking for a mild winter, the average minimum temperatures of 11°C in Ponta Delgada will always suffice. This ensures the chances of a frost in this part of the world are practically nil. And with the mountainous area through the centre of the island offering a great deal of protection from the northerly winds, the climate in this part of the Azores is very pleasant.

An average of 5 daily sunshine hours throughout the month offer plenty of light for those that want a break from the dull, grey days back home. This ensures the perfect opportunity for a fantastic winter getaway.

Where to Stay

For an accommodating hotel right in the centre of Ponta Delgada, book a room at Hotel Camoes. This more traditional hotel has plenty of character, and with truly friendly staff, everyone feels welcome. The rooms are spacious and finished to a high standard. And with such a convenient location there is no need for a car. Visit the local restaurants and bars or take a walk to the Marina.  The hotel offers excellent value for money. So whether you want to stop over for a night or two or spend your whole holiday here, the Hotel Camoes will always suit.

For those that want to get away from it all the Hotel Casa Hintze Ribeiro is the ideal destination. Even in January, the roof top deck on this stunning Inn is the ideal place to sit and watch the world go by, whilst enjoying a breath-taking view. Inside the Inn, the apartments are well equipped. While the public areas include a small gym for those days when you can't get out and enjoy the sunshine. There is even a restaurant within the hotel to enjoy some local cuisine. And with every area finished to a very high specification, a trip to Hotel Casa Hintze Ribeiro is not something you will want to forget.

The Comercial Azores Hostel is a hidden gem in Ponta Delgada. Though the prices are very reasonable, there is no compromise on quality or space within this hostel. Instead you get great value for money in a very welcoming environment that has every facility you could wish for. The central location means all landmarks and local areas are within easy reach. And even though the reception is not always manned, there is a phone number or email address available which is constantly monitored. The hostel boasts many original features which just add to the beauty of the environment and ensure any stay at Comercial Azores Hostel can never be long enough.

Restaurants and Nightlife

Even in January it is wise to book a table at Restaurante Sao Pedro as this place gets busy at all times of the year. And with a range of delicious meals to choose from, it's not hard to see why. The modern décor provides an intimate atmosphere, which means you can focus on good company, good wine and incredible food. And while fish and meat are definitely the specialities of the house, differing dietary requirements including vegetarians and food intolerances can be catered for. Come for a good lunch or opt for a full dinner. A meal at Restaurante Sao Pedro will bring your taste buds to life.

You have to have a sense of humour to eat at Cais 20. But if you can get over the quirky nature of the staff, you can have a really good meal. Unlike most restaurants in Ponta Delgada, fish is the speciality of the house, with the swordfish and fresh lobster particular favourites. But get ready for some reading, the menu is absolutely huge, and perfectly suits the portion sizes that are served. To ensure everything is cooked fresh, some of the meat dishes will be prepared right in front of you on a giant steak stone. For a unique eating experience, Cais 20 can't be missed.

If beef is more to your liking, then take a visit to Asociacion Agricola de Santana. As with many Portuguese restaurants, the focus in this restaurant is on high value, full flavoured meat that is cooked to perfection. And as this restaurant is part of the local meat producers co-operative, you know you are getting the best. For large parties or more intimate groups, taste the meat at Asociacion Agricola de Santana and you may not want to eat anywhere else again.

Things to Do

Especially in the winter months, the Pinhal da Paz is a beautiful place to visit. Take a drive to this natural park for the perfect location to let your children run free. Or to spend time together in a large group. There are plenty of wide, open spaces. And after a good rainfall, the area is luscious and full of life. You can opt to take one of the many formal trails around the park and enjoy some of the beautiful natural sights along the way. Or on a warmer day, take a picnic to enjoy in the areas provided. There is even wood available for your BBQ. For the best sights, enter the bamboo gardens and see some spectacular species. It's a great way to enjoy the outdoors in the Azores.

While the sea is choppy, get yourself down to Azores Surf Centre and make the most of the waves. This is one of the most popular surf schools on the island, offering classes for everyone from beginners to the most experienced. The surf instructors will not only show you how to control your board but will also point you in the direction of the best places to surf. And with plenty of equipment available to rent or buy, you could come to Ponta Delgada for a holiday and go home with a whole new skill.
