Though December is the last month of the year, it is only the start of the winter weather in Ponta Delgada. Especially at the beginning of the month, there are still many of the brighter, warmer days of November left behind, until the colder, wetter climate starts to creep in.
By mid-December you can expect average temperatures of 15°C. And while this is not considered cold for December elsewhere, the temperature in Ponta Delgada only ever falls to an average of 13°C, even in the coldest month of the year. However average highs can be slightly warmer, offering conditions of up to 17°C, especially during the middle of the day.
Nights are a little cooler. The average low temperature in Ponta Delgada in December is usually around 12°C. However, as long as you have an extra layer to put on in the late evening, the climate should always be comfortable.
December also usually marks the end of the hurricane season in this part of the Azores. And though Ponta Delgada is very unlikely to be directly hit by a hurricane at any time of the year, the weather in December can still be far more consistent than in the few months that have come before.
Winters across Sao Miguel is traditionally wet, although December is usually a little drier than the previous month. In Ponta Delgada, it is likely that there will be around 124mm of rainfall across approximately 17 days in December. This means you do need to be prepared for some wet weather, no matter how long you choose to stay.
But Ponta Delgada is still very beautiful at this time of the year. The vegetation is luscious and an average 5 hours of daily sunshine usually mean there is plenty of time to enjoy it. Even over the Christmas period, this is a beautiful destination, just be prepared for some rain.

You then have everything you need for a fabulous winter break on a budget.
There are only 9 rooms at the Residencial Carvalho Araujo which ensures this three star hotel is very personable. But just because it is small, there is no compromise on quality. Booking is flexible, so it doesn't matter whether you want to stay for one night or a whole month, your requirements can usually be accommodated. A living and dining area are also available for the guests to use. But as this family run establishment is situated in the centre of the city, there are plenty of local bars, restaurants and cafes nearby.

Restaurants and Nightlife
The very welcoming Adega Regional is a great place to take the entire family. This is a very homely restaurant which offers a good selection of fresh fish with plenty of nice wines to go with it. For the most local flavour, opt for the house wine which comes directly from the vineyard on the island of Pico. The portions are very generous and the prices make you want to come here again and again. Though not a high brow restaurant with sparkling finish, the Adega Regional is a great place to come for a lunch or quick dinner. It is comfortable, welcoming and the food is divine.
For something a bit out of the ordinary in the Azores, book a table at Let's Go Mexican Food. As the name suggests, there is no traditional Portuguese fare in this lively restaurant. Instead it's Mexican all the way. This small, bright yellow establishment is full of life, even in the middle of December and offers their own unique slant on Mexican favourites. From Burritos and Nachos to Gorditas, every dish is freshly made, and you can really taste it. Add some spice for a great way to warm up on a cooler December day. And wash it down with a deliciously blended mojito, just like the Mexicans would!
When you want to stop for a spot of lunch in Ponta Delgada, Cafe Mascote is a great place to choose. This simple café offers some exceptional food, and the prices are very reasonable too. Every dish can be ordered in a half size for children or those that want a smaller snack. Or simply order drinks and tapas for a great way to refill. Sit back with their signature coffee and watch the world go by. All the ingredients are fresh and the beer is ice cold. It's the perfect interlude on any day in Ponta Delgada.
