Weather Lowdown
With the summer season coming to Playa Pesquero, you can easily expect that the weather in May will be heating up compared to earlier months of the year. And you would be right! The average daily temperature is now 27°C, which is fantastic for walking around and just enjoying the sunshine all day long.
The lowest point of the day can fall to 22°C, which is still very warm, while the high points can go as far as 32°C. That means sunscreen and hats all round, to avoid getting sunburn and spending the rest of your holiday in pain. The average sea temperature also rises accordingly, going up to 28°C along with the outside air highs. You can enjoy a wide range of water sports on the beach and in the sea if you want to get active.
The hours of sunshine per day rises to 10, an increase from April which contributes to the higher temperatures. However, there is a slight catch. This is the beginning of a rainy season here in Cuba, which means that rainfall is going to be on the increase too. Around 118mm will fall, covering around 9 days of the month. This is not a huge amount, however, and you will still see plenty of dry days! You can keep an eye on the weather forecast to plan ahead, so that you can schedule your indoor activities when it is raining and take advantage of the sunny times by enjoying the beach or the pool. This should take care of those brief rainy spells very easily indeed!
Where to Stay
Right on the beach and close to all of the local attractions, Hotel Playa Pesquero has to be perfect for a May stay. You can get to the sands easily, enjoy local nightlife, and watch entertainment within the resort during the day as well as in the evenings. The swimming pool here is surrounded by thatched huts so you can shelter from the heat during the middle of the day.
If you love natural greenery, you will find lots of it at the Memories Holguin Beach Resort. Each of the pools here is set in its own patch of life, with vibrant colours making a common theme in the décor of the whole hotel. Families will never have to leave the hotel grounds, as it opens right onto the Yuraguanal Beach.
Those on a tighter budget will enjoy the Villa Islazul El Bosque, a great place to stay a night or two. It's especially good for hopping around the island to see all of the best spots in different locations. Basic rooms come at a low price, but the lobby bar also provides a place to enjoy drinks and shelter from the midday sun.
Hit the Beach
With the average sea temperature at this time of year being 28°C, heading to the beach is a no-brainer. Pesquero Beach is the beautiful white sand area that you will find right at your door, with clear blue waters which lap this shore invitingly next to lush mangrove forests. This is a truly exotic location where you can relax totally.
Just by the shore are plenty of shops and restaurants where you can get everything you need, as well as providing a bit of shelter from the midday sun. If you want to be a bit more active, then you can also find water sports available in the waves. This is one of the most idyllic locations in Cuba.
Restaurants and Nightlife
Los Toneles is a restaurant serving traditional Cuban food, run by local favourite Michael. He may only have a small restaurant, but it has a reputation as being the best place for mojitos in the whole of Cuba. Found in the centre of the nearby town of Holguin, it offers a view out onto the daily goings-on of the town.
If you prefer gourmet food done to a high standard, pay a visit to 1910 Restaurante & Bar. The food here is also traditional Cuban, with lots of options on the menu including the famed mojitos and other cocktails. Right in the centre of Holguin, it is easy to find, and the owner takes pride in well-trained and attentive staff.
If you are after a great value option, it has to be La Torre. You can visit there between 12pm and 12am every day, giving you the chance to dine late if you wish or just visit for lunch. The menu is varied but includes some great staples like grilled shrimp and fish fillets, or smoked pork. With good prices and great flavour, it's a fine budget choice.
Things to Do
With the warmer sea temperatures of May, it's time to get out there and try some water sports before the windy hurricane season hits. So what can you try? You could hire a jet ski or a pedalo, take surfing lessons, or take a tour on a catamaran. Even speedboats are available for your entertainment! Lots of catamaran tours are out there for you to try.
Then again, why not lie back and relax, since it's a holiday? Sun loungers by the pool are a good bet, and lots of beaches in this area will have sun loungers available for you to use as well. You can work on your tan here and take some time out with a good book. Just don't fall asleep without topping up your suntan lotion.
