Weather Lowdown
When March comes around, the weather is really in the strongest part of the dry season for Playa Pesquero. This is the point of the year when you will see the least rain just 46mm of it will come down throughout the whole month, on a average of only 5 days. If you are hoping to maximise the amount of time you can spend sitting out on a sun lounger working on your tan, this is the time to visit!
The average daily temperature is a warm 25°C, up from February's 24°C, with the weather improving at a steady rate. Be wary of fluctuating temperatures throughout the day, with the early morning and late evening seeing cooler moments: the average low is 19°C, while the average high is 30°C, giving you a lot of variation throughout the month. Don't be caught out by a cool morning be sure to top up your suntan lotion regularly and cover your head if you are going out of your resort to avoid getting sunstroke. Particularly during the middle of the day, those highs can really soar quite quickly.
There are 8 hours of sunshine a day, giving you lots of time to explore and enjoy yourself. Of course, you might want to spend a lot of those hours in the sea: the average sea temperature is a steady 26°C this month, making it lovely for a swim. Nearby beaches and resorts also see similar temperatures, such as Guardalavaca where it is the same temperature in the sea. This means you can go out and try some other beaches without getting an unpleasant surprise in the changes of the weather! There are plenty of different places to try, from sheltered and private beaches to those which are more popular with tourists and safer for families to use.
Where to Stay
You can tell a good hotel by how many people choose to go back there year after year, even when there are other options available. Villa Islazul Don Lino has this kind of reputation. It offers stunning views over the beach, natural areas of green beauty, a pool for guests to use, and stone or wood villas which you can stay in.
Slightly back from the shore, where you can climb a slight hill for better views while the March sun is still cool enough to do so, you will find the Villa Pinares De Mayari. Wooden villas here give you a panoramic display of the shore and surrounding countryside.
There is also the option of a homestay in the Casa de Yodalis Trasobares, where breakfast is provided along with plenty of insights into Cuban culture from your host. It is situated in the nearby town of Holguin, a little way back from the Playa, so you can come back to the sands when you want to but also have the convenience of shops and local sights.
Hit the Beach
That average sea temperature of 26°C cannot be ignored, so even if you don't want to go scuba diving, you should definitely hit the beach as often as possible. Playa Covarrubias is one of the best options around, with a 5-kilometre-long beach which offers a less crowded choice than some of the nearby resorts. It is close by to Las Tunas where you will find shopping, restaurants, and entertainment. It may be a short drive away, but it's worth a visit.
Restaurants and Nightlife
For low prices and lots of choice, Bahia del Sol can't be beaten. This seafood and Cuban cuisine restaurant serves everything on platters, so you can pick and choose little bits of whatever you like. It's a fantastic way to become familiar with the traditional cuisine of the area and to try as much as possible.
The Ranchon Los Almendros offers a little more challenging approach as it is not right on the beach road, but once you find it you will be very pleased that you did. They serve huge portions of local delicacies like lobster, fried plantains, chicken, and kebabs. Taxi drivers are often happy to drop you here as it is well-known locally.
You could also try La Parrillada de la Musica, where live music is played alongside your food every night. Seafood and a great atmosphere are just two of the highlights. The chef also prepares every meal right under your eyes, and the prices are great. Cocktails are served nightly at this hotspot which is proving popular with locals.
Things to Do
The Eagle Ray Scuba Diving Center offers the perfect way to explore the warm waters of the sea. You can learn to scuba dive with their trainers, getting up close and personal with the nearby coral reefs. If you already have qualifications you can hire scuba diving equipment from a dive centre like Coral Reef Diving, or bring your own with you if you have it. At Pesquero you will find a dive site which features black coral, highly prized and rare, as well as lots of fish and sponges. It's worth taking a look as this is a very unusual sight. There are also lots of other nearby dive sites if you find that you catch the bug!
