Weather Lowdown

For the hottest possible sun, the best time to visit Playa Pesquero is definitely July. As the height of summer hits, the temperature soars to a daily average to 29°C the kind of weather where shorts and t-shirts are not only possible, but just about compulsory for daytime wear! The highest points of the day can even go up as far as 33°C, with the lows only dropping to around 24°C.

We are in the middle of the rainy season here, however, which means you might find a few showers during your stay. But don't worry these will actually help you to cool off, and could be a welcome break from the heat! There is an average of 128mm set to come down throughout this month, and that covers 11 days. It's only around a third of the month which will see any rain, so this won't disrupt your holiday too much even if you do see a shower or two and the weather forecast will always help you to plan your days easily.

The days are also at their longest at this time of year, giving you that extra bit of time to explore all the more and get that tan. 11 hours of sunshine on average will contribute to those wonderful high temperatures. This is true for other resorts nearby too, like Holguin, so you can travel over for a day trip any time that you like. The sea temperature is also very pleasant right now go for a dip and you will feel an average of 29°C water against your skin. That's perfect for snorkelling, swimming, or trying any of the water sports that might be available on your beach! Just make sure the safety flags are green and you are good to go into the water.

Where to Stay

The Occidental Gran Playa Turquesa allows you to stay directly on the beach, with the sand encroaching on the doors of the hotel. All-inclusive options are available so you don't have to worry about anything at all during your stay, and you can also visit a nature reserve very nearby if you want to get out and explore.

Basic rooms are available at the Villa Islazul Mirador de Mayabe, but the good news is that this makes it budget-friendly. Spa and massage treatments are also part of their offerings on site, along with a pool, a bar, and hand-painted murals which decorate the hotel for a real homely feel.

Or how about the Villa Cayo Saetia Hotel? It is actually placed on a small island, so you will need to use a boat or a bridge to get to it, which makes it feel wonderfully isolated. Wooden villas offer you a home base from which you can explore the nature reserve it sits on, including beautiful and exotic plants and animals.

Hit the Beach

One of the closest beaches to Playa Pesquero is Guardalavaca Beach. It can be busy as three hotels open onto the sand here, each of them with their own sections of land that they lay claim to, and locals also come to enjoy the weather. The beach is 1020 metres long, however, so there is enough room to go around.

You should definitely take a dip in the sea, as the average temperature of 29°C offers you a great chance to do so, and snorkelling is also perfectly acceptable on this beach. You may be competing for space a little, but that also means that you will be safer with more people around to watch out for you. The size and the natural beauty of this beach combine to make it one of the most popular spots around.

Restaurants and Nightlife

If you want the chance of eating within a dining room or out on a terrace, head to Holguin and the Restaurant Bar Valencia. This is well-known amongst locals thanks to the low prices and the good food. The Pina Coladas here are excellent, and are served up next to a fantastic steak, so it's a great shout.

Traditional Cuban dishes are served up at the La Quinta de Montero restaurant, but it also features pizza as well as other international dishes. If you choose a meat dish, you can watch the staff grill it outdoors. It's tucked into a small courtyard in a quiet place in town, so you can be sure of a relaxing meal.

Another partially hidden restaurant is Polinesio, which you could walk by without noticing due to the fact that it is on top of a residential building! Like many Cubans, the owners here capitalised on the space they had to turn their assets into a business. You can see the whole town below, which makes it a hot ticket. You may need to purchase a reservation from a taxi driver or another person, as many people wait in line in the morning to get a table in this sought-after location. A night-time visit is always recommended for the full experience.

Things to Do

The Acuario Cayo Naranjo is an aquarium which sits just a few kilometres away from Playa Pesquero, and it is packed full with interesting sea creatures in exotic colours and shapes. You will definitely enjoy a day out here, and kids will love it too, with shows and boat rides thrown into the mix. It's a great way to cool off on those hot July days.

Photo walks are another popular pastime in Cuba, mostly thanks to the "old world" charm of the island and the various classic cars that are owned here. Whether you join an organised tour or make your own, this is about walking around with your camera in hand to take photographs of all of the amazing things you see. It's a great way to create a photo book you can print later on to remember your trip.
