Weather Lowdown
Temperatures begin to fall in the purpose-built resort of Playa Paraiso on Tenerife's west coast in October but it still remains one of the warmest months with an average temperature of 23ºC (73ºF), perfect for a late holiday in the sun.
Despite slightly cooler temperatures this month, average high temperatures can still reach a hot 26ºC (79ºF) and lows and night time temperature averages are still a warm 19ºC (66ºF). As expected, the temperature in the resort falls slightly during the month with the hottest temperatures likely in the first week.
The dry summer months end this month with a slight increase in rainfall from a negligible 3mm over two days in September to 9mm over five days this month but there remains only a 13% chance of rain and a 3% chance of a cloudy day.
Those hoping to get a late, post-summer tan will be happy with the 51% chance of experiencing a sunny day and, although the average sunshine hours fall slightly from 11 in September, there are still a generous 10 sunshine hours to enjoy each day this month.
Although the dry, warm trade winds blowing up from Africa are a fairly constant element to the weather here the wind is actually at its lowest this month with only a 34% chance of experiencing a windy day.
Water sport fans will be thrilled with the warm sea water this month with an inviting 24ºC (75ºF) average making this a great month to get out on the water for a bit of fun in the sea, even if that's only taking a quick dip on the beach.
Where to Stay
For a fantastic 4-star all-inclusive experience in October consider Iberostar Las Dalias at Playa del Bobo close to Costa Adeje. With two swimming pools and a children's pool and kids club this is a great option for young families not restricted by school holidays. There's plenty of entertainment and a range of dining options including a drinks station and poolside snack bar. Evening entertainment includes several bars with live music.
If you are looking for an adult only option then the colonial-style Adrián Hoteles Colón Guanahaní at Costa Adeje, a short walk from Playa Fañabé is a great choice. With an emphasis on a relaxing atmosphere and great culinary experience this is a lovely place to get away from it all whether you choose to simply relax by the hotel's several heated pools, pamper yourself in the beauty rooms or stroll down to the beach for a dip.
The Vista Nautica Apartments in Playa Paraiso is directly opposite the town's attractive Lido with its kids and general swimming areas, free for guests staying in the apartments. The apartments have their own large sunbathing terrace with views out across the ocean. It is also a short walk to the town's lava beach which offers excellent snorkelling.
Things to Do
For something a little bit different why not visit the Camel Park and take a ride on one of these intriguing creatures. While the camels themselves may have been bred for the heat of the Sahara Desert, the cooler temperatures in October make this the perfect month to try this unique mode of transport. Camels have been used on the island for generations so exploring the beautiful surroundings of southern Tenerife on one of these animals is a uniquely authentic Canaries experience. There is also a working farm at the park which visitors are invited to experience.
If the weather is a little cloudy then take the opportunity to explore a bit more of this beautiful island with a visit to the pretty northern town of Icod de los Vinos. With its historic Plaza San Marcos surrounded by traditional white houses you will get a sense of the island's past. The historic church, the Iglesia de San Marcos with a silver altar, and the town's famous ancient dragon tree make this well worth a visit. Bear in mind that the dragon tree, one of the world's oldest, is located within Parque del Drago and you will need to pay to enter but the cost also includes the Park's beautiful botanical gardens.
Hit the Beach
To the north of Playa Paraiso is Los Gigantes, a resort nestled at the foot of the giant cliffs which give the town its name. The beach here, known at Los Guios, is 100m long with black sand and is a great place for swimming thanks to the natural protection of the harbour and the surrounding cliffs which shelter it from waves. The water is shallow, making it the perfect option for families with children. Although there are no water sports on the actual beach, a number of companies offer sports from the neighbouring harbour.
Playa Los Abrigos is a tiny cove with a small black sand beach perfect for stopping off for a quiet dip on the way to the nearby fishing harbour of Los Abrigos. There is a café but the benefit of its size is that it never becomes crowded with tourists.
Eating & Drinking Out
El Mesón up the coast in Puerto Santiago is popular among locals and tourists alike for its traditional Canarian cuisine including a delicious rabbit stew or whole suckling pig as well as an excellent array of fresh, local seafood. The owner is friendly, welcoming and always happy to chat.
For a more basic culinary experience but just as warm a welcome try El Corazon in Playa Paraiso itself. With well-cooked European cuisine and a lively bar, this is a favourite with tourists and is located on the town's Avenue Adeje 300.
If you want to combine an evening drink with a dance then venture to St. Eugenes at Costa Adeje. This is a lively little bar with live music and a compact dance floor for dancing the night away.
