Weather Lowdown

The average temperature in the purpose-built resort of Playa Paraiso on the west coast of Tenerife begins to climb in March to a warm 19ºC (66ºF) making it an ideal time to visit after the winter sun crowds have gone and before the summer crowds begin to arrive.

Those hoping to enjoy an out of season beach holiday will find what they are looking for this month with average highs of 22ºC (72ºF) and average of 10 sunshine hours per day. This is considerably warmer than some of the northern Tenerife resorts in like Puerto de la Cruz which has average temperatures of only 13ºC (55ºF) this month. The highest temperatures are usually experienced during the middle of the month with average daily temperatures of 20ºC most likely from around the 8th to the 23rd.

Although the days are getting warmer, the evenings this month remain a little chilly with average low temperatures of 15ºC (59ºF) so it is still advisable to pack some extra layers for going out in the evening.

The rainfall drops again this month from its levels in February with only 15mm of raining falling over 5 days and only a 7% chance of visitors experiencing a rainy day. There is also only a 2% chance of a cloudy day and a 51% chance of an entirely sunny day, which makes this a great month for sunbathers to get a tan.

Despite this the average seawater temperature remains at its lowest of 19ºC (66ºF) which, although slightly chilly, is still warm enough for a dip or to take part in a range of water sports offered in the resort including the snorkelling a scuba diving for which the resort is famous.

The wind also drops this year although the risk of experiencing a windy day is still 46% and there is also a slight chance of wind bringing dust storms over from the Sahara.

Where to Stay

Those looking for flexibility in their mid-market accommodation will enjoy the self-catering apartments and bungalows at Isabel Hotel close to Fañabe Beach. The accommodation all comes with its own kitchen and there is a mini market on the premises but there is also a buffet restaurant and two bars where guests can meet up for drinks and meals. The apartments all feature balconies while the bungalows have their own terraces and there is a large communal pool. The Isabel Hotel prides itself on being a family hotel and there is a Kids' Club to entertain the little ones.

If you're looking for a touch of luxury for spring in March then look no further than The Ritz-Carlton along the coast at Abama. With its Moorish architecture, seven swimming pools, spa, golf course, tennis, its own exclusive beach and 10 restaurants including one with 2-Michelin stars, this 5-star hotel really has everything you could ever wish for from a luxury hotel. Set on a cliff top guest take the hotel's own funicular railway down to the private beach.

For a more reasonably priced option, those just looking to rest their head at night while enjoy the facilities of the resort during the day should consider the Estudio Paraiso del Sur in Playa Paraiso, just 250 yards from the beach. While the apartment has its own balcony with sea view there is also a shared outdoor pool and sun terrace.

Things to Do

Take time in the cooler temperatures of March before the summer highs to explore the stunning interior of Tenerife and you will discover some hidden gems like the beautiful, picturesque village of Masca set high on mountainous ridges  with views out across the Atlantic. Nestled into the Masca and Madre del Agua gorges, the pretty white houses were completely isolated until the 1970s when a road was built to access it so the community here is largely self-sufficient. Visitors here will feel like they have stepped back in time to a simpler island existence.

If you're craving a little retail therapy and want more than the usual souvenirs then pop along the coast to Costa Adeje and visit the extremely chic Plaza del Duque mall. This is definitely where the rich set like to shop so expect some beautiful luxury items from fashion and beauty items to elegant home ware but it's a great excursion even if you only go to 'window shop' and see how the other half live.

Hit the Beach

If you like your beaches bustling with plenty of activity then Las Vistas beach at Los Cristianos is perfect for you. A wide stretch of sand with plenty of restaurants, bars, snack and ice cream stalls lining its busy promenade there's plenty going on here. This bustling beach is the perfect place to try your hand at a wide range of water sports including parasailing and a banana boat although, be warned, the average sea temperatures in March can still be a little chilly at 19ºC.

If the sea temperatures are too cool for you this month then why not travel to the north of the island to take in the beauty of Playa El Bollullo close to Puerto de la Cruz. Lined by the dramatic beauty of the volcanic cliffs this natural beach can be reached by car but at this time of year it is worth considering taking the stunning coastal path. The jagged rocks and black sand make this a stunning beach but because of its seclusion there are no facilities and only a small beach café for refreshments so consider bringing food and drink with you.

Eating & Drinking Out

La Rosa Nera is a lovely family-run Italian restaurant in Playa Paraiso with a large outdoor terrace so that you can enjoy dinner under the stars. The large portions are made up of excellent fresh cooked Italian favourites and there is a good selection of wine all at reasonable prices. There is also a friendly bar where snacks are served.

Along the coast in the fishing village of La Caleta is the Restaurante La Vieja which specialises in fresh seafood caught in the local area. Delicious traditional Canary seafood dishes are served on the restaurant's beautiful terrace with views across the ocean. A rare treat.

The Emperador II Bar in Playa Paraiso is a great place to enjoy a drink as the sun goes down thanks to its large outside terrace. Serving a range of beers and other drinks this is a popular, lively night time spot.
