What's the Weather like in Playa Del Carmen in May
Temperature
As Playa del Carmen, Mexico, heads towards summer things really start to heat up. The temperatures in May are extremely warm and the hours of daily sunshine increase thanks to the resort's location so close to the equator. The tropical climate means that there is a dry season and a rainy season but, whilst May falls on the cusp of the two, there is still barely any rain throughout the month. This is a great time of year to visit Playa del Carmen to make the most of the warm weather before the rains set in.
With average temperatures settling at around 28°C, Playa del Carmen is very hot at this time of year. But these temperatures can rise even more, with average high temperatures reaching a scorching 32°C during the hotter parts of the day. The tropical climate means that the evenings and nights are warm and muggy as well, with temperatures hardly ever falling below 25°C. This means you probably won't need to pack any warmer layers, though you might wish to do so just in case. T-shirts, shorts, and swimwear are perfect for during the day, and don't forget to pack lots of sun cream to protect yourself against the sun's strong rays at this time of year.
Rain
Though the rainy season is almost upon Playa del Carmen in May, there is still very little rainfall throughout the month. Only around 16mm falls across an average of 1 day, which means it is very unlikely that you'll get caught in any showers. Because of its tropical climate, when it does rain in the resort, it tends to be in short, sharp bursts which blow over pretty quickly, leaving behind glorious sunshine and typically warm weather.
Sunshine Hours
Playa del Carmen's placement so close to the equator means that there is very little variation in the amount of sunshine hours throughout the year. So, whilst May might almost be summer, you can still expect to see a similar amount of sunshine as the previous months. On average, there are about 11 hours of sunshine per day throughout May, leaving you plenty of time to get out and about and explore all that the resort has to offer.
Average Sea Temperature
It is likely that you'll visit the beach a lot if you visit Playa del Carmen at this time of year and, with sea temperatures sitting at a very pleasant 28°C, there is no chance of you feeling cold. The warm waters are characteristic of the Caribbean Sea and provide the perfect place to dabble in some watersports.
