Both weather conditions are caused by sand storms being blown over from the west coast of Africa and whilst they can usually be predicted well in advance, it's anyone's guess as to how long they're going to last. Some calimas and siroccos only go on for three hours, whereas others can last as long as ten days.

Whilst they don't pose any real danger when they occur in the winter months, calimas and siroccos can prove to be very dangerous during the summer months, when temperatures up to 20°C higher than average can make staying indoors obligatory.
