When it comes to March, Panama Canal is almost at the hottest it will ever be. Daily average temperatures may stick around 28°C the same as preceding and following months but the highs and lows tell a different story. Here you will find average lows of 23°C almost all year round, but when it gets hot, it gets hot. Highs of 33°C are to be expected during this month, and temperatures may indeed rise even higher on a daily basis.
Although there are 8 hours of sunshine a day this month but there were 9 a day in February, this month takes the crown for being the warmer of the two. So why is that? Largely it is due to the fact that there is less rainfall this month, as the peak of the dry season. The change is actually incredible, from over 400mm of rain in the wet season to just 31mm this month. That normally falls over around 4 days.
Panama is known for lush wet seasons and arid dry seasons, where the temperatures can soar. It is the same story in places like Isla Ensenada along the coast from here, where temperatures can actually be even more blisteringly hot. It is very important to pay attention to sun protection, such as hats, sunscreen, and light clothing. Do not forget to hydrate yourself well at the same time.
So long as there is no storm or rough sea, you will always be able to enjoy taking a swim. This is down to the gorgeous 28°C waters, which will always be waiting for you to enjoy them. The best advice is to pay attention to the weather forecast, which will tell you how hot it will be and also whether it will be safe to swim. Be cautious, however, and remember to check for warning flags on the beach itself as well.
The Westin Playa Bonita Panama is a hotel in a gorgeous location with all of the expected amenities the kind of place where you will want to stay not just this year, but every March to come. There are three infinity pools here, six restaurants, a Clarins spa, and close access to a golden beach. Does it get much better than that?
The Balboa Heights Bed & Breakfast is situated near the old town, should you wish for something a bit more authentic and down-to-earth. It is perfect for families as the owners have children of their own, and if you feel like hanging around, you can relax and watch exotic birds in their garden.
If you want to save money, the Kame House Hostel is perfect. This beautiful house on a hill is surrounded by wildlife and greenery, yet is only a short walk from more central locations. It's great for nature lovers and those who want to explore on their own.
Farfan Beach is the ideal place to visit during this month, with the average sea temperature hitting 28°C. It is important to spend at least one day of your holiday finding out what it is like to swim in water that is this warm in a natural environment! You will find Farfan Beach on the far side of the Panama Canal, opposite Panama City, with fantastic views back across the waves to where the city awaits.
The main landmark here is the Bridge of the Americas, which you can see from the beach, getting some great photo opportunities. Rocky outcrops give way to golden sands, where you can enjoy sunbathing or head into the water.
Stop off at the Casa Sucre Coffeehouse if you need some refreshment. Here you will find a historic colonial building which has been converted into a café, right in the heart of the old town and with plenty of stories of its own to tell. They offer local coffees for you to try.
If you want to find where the hip crowd hangs out, head to Tantalo Kitchen. Here you will find house cocktails like the cotton candy mojito, and delicious menu items from around the world. Served on tall benches, so everyone can mingle together, this is a great dining experience.
The Puerta de Tierra Steak House is available for those who want something a bit heartier. Steak is the main option on the menu, of course, but you can also find seafood and other delicacies. This gives you the chance to eat with a little more privacy if you like having a table to yourself.
Since March is a lovely, hot time to visit, try some great outdoor activities. Head out to Soberania National Park and you can take an excursion which explores this fantastic natural area. The Rainforest Discovery Centre and its Observation Tower are big highlights, allowing you to look out over the whole park.
You can also visit the Bridge of the Americas, which is a big landmark here. It stretches out from one side of the Canal to the other, affording wonderful views on both sides. It dominates the skyline from many of the surrounding beaches, so you can admire it from below or take a trip over it.
