To the eastern coast of the island of Lefkada in Greece sits the town of Nidri. Nidri is a popular tourist resort and one of the most scenic and cosmopolitan towns in Lefkada, which lies 11km north of the island's capital, Fira. Nidri consists of a stunning tree lined sandy beach with crystal clear waters and attracts a large number of tourists from across the globe but especially the rest of Europe every summer.
The islets of Heloni, Sparti, Madouri, Scorpio and Scorpidi can all be seen from beautiful Nidri beach. In addition to the lovely beach, visitors can enjoy jet skiing, wind surfing, yachting, para-sailing, swimming, water skiing, surfing and many other fun water based activities. The water here is clean and clear and free of currents, plus the seawater temperature remains inviting throughout the year. The area around Nidri is fairly flat making walking and cycling enjoyable, especially routes that wind through surrounding olive groves.
Nidri has a pretty little port full of small fishing boats, sail boats and luxurious yachts, and during the summer season different events liven up the place. Various exhibitions, religious celebrations and interesting cultural performances are well worth keeping your eyes peeled for. The town of Nidri is also one of the main yachting points in the Ionian Sea and due to its setting on the eastern coast usually enjoys a calm sea ideal for learning how to sail. One of the biggest yachting events in the Mediterranean, the annual Ionian Regatta, is held in Nidri usually around the third Thursday of September. This event is a remarkable sight and normally draws around 190 entries and a big crowd of spectators.
Nidri sits on the edge of striking cliffs with an amazing view over the nearby volcano. Narrow picturesque streets wind through the town with small white painted houses and a number of blue domed churches both quintessential features of Greece.
Nidri has a good variety of bars, cafes, nightclubs, restaurants, hotels and taverns located in the town and its surrounding area. The bars and restaurants in this area offer a blend of Greek and international cuisine to suit all tastes. Peak season in Nidri is May to October. Plan an early or late Greek getaway at the start or end of the summer season for a more relaxed, laid back holiday.
