Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama in the US have had states of emergency declared ahead of a severe storm, and around 3,000 flights were grounded by bad weather conditions earlier this week.
The disruption is likely to be widespread with as many as 50 million people across the region preparing to face the adverse effects of the extreme weather over the next two days.
Motorists from Texas to Virginia have been warned to stay off the roads, and heavy snow is on its way with up to 1ft of snow forecast to fall in parts of Virginia, while areas along the North Carolina coast may receive up to 10 inches of snow.
However, itโs not the heavy snowfall that is likely to cause the main issues, according Jason Deese of the US National Weather Service, ice is the bigger concern.
