August is in full swing in Málaga, Spain and, with it, one of the most popular summer events: the Málaga Fair. It is a cosmopolitan and open festival, in line with the spirit of the city, inviting locals and tourists alike to enjoy fantastic music, dance, food, joy and an amazing atmosphere and wonderful weather for one whole week (17 to 24 August 2013).
In a burst of light, colour and joy, the Fair begins with music and fireworks in a show that has no match in the province. More than 4,000kg in fireworks fill the night with colour and mark the beginning of the celebrations.
In the Old Town, the streets fill up with polka dots, Córdoba hats and music to accompany the traditional procession to the Shrine of Virgen de la Victoria, which sees horse riders, carriages and devotees accompany the Fair’s standard bearer.
To soak up the festive atmosphere, you can’t beat bagging a prime spot on a sunny bar terrace in the centre of town and enjoying a few tapas washed down with Málaga sweet wine. Salud!
One of the Fair’s distinguishing features are its two nerve centres: the Downtown Fair, along the streets of the Historic District (tapas and wine, music, merrymaking) and the Fairground, where lit-up kiosks offer the best food and a buzzing atmosphere, plus horse rides during the day and live shows in the evening.
Of course, there is a funfair to boost everyone’s adrenaline, inviting children and grown-ups to join in.
And there is more: a wide range of entertainment and cultural activities across Málaga Province, adding up to the regular offer of splendid beaches, scrumptious food, top-rate museums, fun outdoor sports from golf to kitesurfing, 23 natural beauty areas and 101 towns and villages.
Come to Málaga and experience one of the most exciting fairs in Southern Europe. Ole!
