Newquay is a coastal town on the Atlantic coast and the climate tends to be milder than that of the rest of England, but with its location on the coast the weather is apt to change at a moment's notice.
So mild is the weather that the mean temperatures at the start of the year are comparable to those of Corfu and Benidorm, which is a statement Britain can rarely boast.
January is the penultimate month of winter in Newquay.
Thanks in part to the salty air, frost and snow are rare for Newquay, but it's still advisable to have warm clothes at hand.
There is a considerable amount on offer in Newquay in January. Eden's Winter Festival takes place between mid-January and early February at St. Austell's Eden Project.
The festival has everything from storytelling to films and also includes choir concerts, live music and an ice-skating rink.
In addition to Eden's Winter Festival there is also the SECTA Catering and Hospitality Trade Show from late January and spilling over into early February.
This show isn't in Newquay itself, but is only 36 miles away at the Looe Bay Holiday Park, where visitors can enjoy numerous themed events.
